I am here, there, and everywhere.

My Self-Summary

I'm a scientist, lab monkey, performer of miracles.

I enjoy traveling, cooking, reading, dancing, visiting museums (the stranger the museum, the better; for example, I'd really like to hit up the Mutter museum sometime and I heard about a museum all about funerals, these intrigue me) seeing old, new and independent movies, biking to new areas (to me) of Philly and drinking coffee. I enjoy going to see live music (if I were to have an addiction, this would probably be it). I also run a book club here in Philly.

I moved to Philly from Indiana (grad school) about 10 months ago. But I'm originally from Florida. With some fellow new-to-towners, I'm working on discovering Philadelphia one bar at a time. My favorite Philly tourist spot is the Ben Franklin "House" on Market. I like to go into the "museum" underneath and into the room full of telephones and call all the random historic figures to hear what they have to say about Franklin... it's amazingly silly.

A few years ago I taught Argentinean Tango and hope to get back into it again soon. It's sometimes sad how a passion for something can get pushed to the wayside by school and work.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm working as a research scientist in behavioral neuroscience and a pinch-hitter for the stammtisch drinking team. And as I've mentioned before, I run a book club.

I’m really good at

Entertaining strangers in social settings, dancing (tango, ballroom, latin, etc), knowing random useless information, parallel parking and assembling furniture.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm probably smiling, laughing and generally having a good time.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

crazy random books of all sorts, crazy random music of all sorts, crazy random movies of all sorts, and pickles

or, more specifically:

books: Lolita, The Stranger, Confederacy of Dunces, Geek Love, Life After God, American Gods, Bonk, Stiff, Unaccustomed Earth, Leaving Las Vegas, anything David Sedaris, Running with Scissors, Concrete Island

movies: Fail-Safe (because although I loved Dr. Strangelove, this came out that same year and is really amazing and yet often overlooked), Blue Velvet, Raising Arizona, Arizona Dreams, Before the Rain, Harold and Maude, Gummo, The House of Yes, The Passion of Joan of Arc, With a Friend Like Henry, Girl on the Bridge, Paper Moon, Bonnie and Clyde, In the Company of Men, Welcome to the Dollhouse, American Psycho, Drugstore Cowboy, Orlando, Old Westerns (How the West Was Won, My Name is Nobody), Classics (Hitchcock, etc), Zombieland

music: very open to all genres from old country (not new) to electronica to punk. Favorites include Serge Gainsbourg, Tricky, Leonard Cohen, Joy Division, Hank Williams, Pulp, Enon, Grinderman, Holy Fuck!, Neil Young, Piazzolla, Johnny Cash, Interpol, Smog, Will Oldham, Suicide, Zombina and the Skelletones, The Kills, Blonde Redhead, Dead Can Dance, Ladytron, Yo La Tengo, Gotan Project, Brian Eno, Captain Beefheart, Happy Mondays, Cat Stevens, Magnetic Fields... etc. After living in a small town in Indiana for far too many years (grad school), I find myself overcompensating for lost time by going to all the live shows I can afford.

food: Thai, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Sushi
I really enjoying trying to make interesting dishes on my own. I'm not very skilled at following recipes and prefer to wing it.

The six things I could never do without

I keep redoing this one. I think besides the basic survival necessities (food, water, oxyen, shelter)... I could probably do without most things. Though it's always nice to have a great lab tech on hand. Maybe that and mint shampoo and conditioner.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Science stuff and things to procrastinate.

When visiting this site, I spend a lot of time thinking about:
- why would anyone include genitalia in their profile name, seriously, I'm not going to reply to bigcock4u or anything along those lines
- why doesn't this guy have any pictures that he didn't take of himself in his bathroom with his cameraphone... doesn't he have friends? doesn't he do anything else besides stare at himself in the mirror in a bathroom?
- wow, there certainly are a lot of vegetarians out there
- quickmatch makes me feel like a bad judgmental person, but damnit, that's just the way it is and sometimes it is entertaining
- why would someone use pictures of themselves paired with girls if they are single... this does not make me want to reply to your message
- should an A-list member here be more desirable or less
- I would like to take a moment to let you know that you do not HAVE to "complete" your profile. So really, no need to write a journal on how OKstoopid won't give you 100% until you do... it's not necessary.
- isn't it awkward when someone you've already met and it didn't work out with shows up in your quiver...
- why am I here again? oh right, take a chance... meet new people... see what happens

On a typical Friday night I am

Out for Friday beers with the crew, usually in search of a new bar or restaurant to try out. If not out, then I'm probably cooking for friends.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I once enjoyed a moment at a Slayer concert. Feel free to ask about the details.

I may or may not be a flag-hag. It may just be my line of work, but I find that most of my friends are foreign.

You should message me if

you want to or feel the need to entertain me.

A friend, also on here, once told me that meeting people from OkC is really not a first date... it's the pre-date... the trial meeting to decide if you want to go out on a real date. I like this idea, it takes the pressure off... right?
