My self-summary
One of the best compliments I've ever received was "You're cool like Bertrand Russell is cool." Considering one of his colleagues called Russell a Platonic dialogue in himself, I count this pretty high praise.

Hi. I'm Gavin. The personality tab over there covers a lot of ground, so I'll hit some other highlights here.
Somehow, despite spending the vast majority of my life in rural southwest Missouri, I'm a humanist, and a borderline antitheist. While I'm picking up a degree in math, I've done a healthy amount of reading in other subjects--mostly philosophy, physics and psychology. I've been gaming since age 2. I can't dance until I'm falling-down drunk.
What I’m doing with my life
Back in Springfield after 2 months in Florida. Currently, I'm paying the bills and finishing my math degree.

Still working out what comes after graduation. I'm really interested in mathematical modeling of cognitive processes, and would love to find a way to get paid to work on that, which will almost certainly involve grad school at some point.
I’m really good at
Being technically correct
Cards Against Humanity
Most video games
Finding counterexamples
Explaining math/physics (relatively) simply
The first things people usually notice about me
Possibly that my vocabulary consists of nearly nothing but technical language and vulgarity.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Authors/Books: Iain M. Banks, Kurt Vonnegut, Isaac Asimov, Neil Gaiman, Doug Hofstadter, Daniel Dennett. Stranger in a Strange Land, 1984, Hitchhiker's Guide series, Watchmen, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Dark Tower series.

I don't often make time for movies or TV, so I'm a bit behind. If you really want to upset a stranger on the internet, Breaking Bad spoilers would probably do it.

Movies: Good Will Hunting, A Beautiful Mind, What Dreams May Come, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anchorman, Moon, Primer, Away We Go

Shows: Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, House of Cards, Futurama, Archer, Adventure Time / Bravest Warriors, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Webcomics: A Softer World, Pictures for Sad Children, SMBC, Perry Bible Fellowship, Dresden Codak, A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible, The Nerds of Paradise

Mostly indie folk/pop/rock, alt and post-rock, trip hop, and intersections thereof. Favorites include Alexi Murdoch, Andrew WK, Blackmill, Boards of Canada, Bonobo, Bright Eyes, Cake, The Crystal Method, Death Cab for Cutie, Ernest Gonzales, The Flaming Lips, Flobots, The Glitch Mob, Iron & Wine, Jimmy Eat World, Lindsey Stirling, Modest Mouse, Phutureprimitive, The Postal Service, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ronald Jenkees, Starscream, This Will Destroy You, Vitamin String Quartet, The xx, and Zoe Keating.
...I should probably stop there, this could go on for a while

Food: Italian. Sushi, and most seafood for that matter. Spicy whatnot. Cheese. Tiramisu almost makes me believe something wants us to like it here. I am not terribly particular, but I have no love for sour cream, mayo, or corn.
The six things I could never do without
I'm going to take six as a suggestion.

1. Coffee. Without it, I am basically useless. Also, I have to have SOMETHING to turn into theorems.

2. Sunlight. Seasonal affective disorder is a bitch. If I can actually get sun, though, I'm like fucking Birdman. Until the radiation poisoning sets in.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Applications of what math I know
Existential risk
Public policy
Electoral reform
Cognitive processes (so, thinking about thinking. Aristotle would love this shit.)
On a typical Friday night I am
Lately, I've been staying in and reading roughly all the damn time. Ideally, I'd be downtown, probably at Ernie Bigg's or Barkade.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
When I was a kid, I never wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. I wanted to be a spaceship.
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 18–31
  • Located anywhere
  • Who are single
  • For casual sex
