I am thinking, waking up early, and being tall.

My Self-Summary

I like language, and baking, and photography. I recently started waking (getting) up early - by which I mean, around dawn - and am enjoying it.

What I’m doing with my life

I work writing image processing or user interface code for Sony (thus living in Culver City). When not there, I am likely to be practicing Wing Chun (martial art), throwing pots (in the constructive sense), or riding my bicycle one place or another. Also, sleep.

And, now and then, off on an adventure - most recently, away to Thailand on the spur of the moment to go on a bike trip with my cousin. (There goes plausible deniability for having an account here, if I was hoping for it.)

The first things people usually notice about me

Tall.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I have recently read and enjoyed a number of books by Connie Willis, the first few Temeraire books, Lavinia (Ursula K. LeGuin), and The Perks of Being A Wallflower. I was not a huge fan of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, nor of Lullaby (Palahniuk - though I do enjoy other of his writing). I consider LoTR a classic(s), of course, and count as favorites (among others) the Pooh books (and some of Milne's poetry), Neal Stephenson, Bone, Calvin and Hobbes, Kingsolver, Atlas Shrugged (or Fountainhead), and Narnia. I am offended by the Time Traveler's Wife and My Sister's Keeper movies, though (owing to my high regard for the books) I've avoided all contact with the movies.

However! I do like movies, too. Particular favorites: Lives of Others, Princess Bride, Harold and Maude, 101 Dalmations (which I recently saw part of again, knowing more about animation, and which impressed me all over again), Hot Fuzz, most Pixar (but cars less and Ratatouille more), Stranger than Fiction, Everything is Illuminated, and - it being my first credit, too - Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. Among others. If you get to know me (or even if not), though, you will probably at some point be astounded by something I have -not- seen that, really, everyone knows by heart.

I have recently been listening to CAKE, and Imogen Heap, and Metric; and string quartets, especially Haydn's No. 28 (by the Beaux Arts Trio) and Brahms' Op. 34 (which is really a piano quintet; Takacs), and Yo-yo Ma's rendition of Bach's solo 'cello suites are always a favorite. Also, of course not exhaustive: Rajaton (about whom I learned while singing a cappella in college), Ratatat, Flaming Lips, Decemberists; Haris Alexiou and Κώστας Μακεδώνας; The Beatles; the occasional Regina Spektor and Jason Mraz; NoFX, No Doubt.

I eat almost anything and enjoy most of it, though I did turn down my opportunity to try bugs (they just look so leggy, all spines and wiggly feelers). But, I am a particular fan of Mexican (or New Mexican – sopapillas are a treat), and Thai, and Chinese, and pizza and other Italian, and homemade bread fresh out of the oven.
