My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I grew up on a farm in Indiana where my best friend was a horse. That didn't turn out to be exciting enough for me and my punk rock teenage attitude, so I moved to Chicago as soon as I could to study Creative Writing. Like most people who go to art school, reality soon struck and I found out I needed to find something else to be good at. I started teaching Creative Writing workshops on Chicago's south and west side for some social justice and education non-profits and loved it. Now, I am a 3rd grade public school teacher on the west side who tries to keep sane by dancing and drinking on the weekends. I also write stories my students probably shouldn't ever read and tell them to drunk crowds of people sometimes.
Note: this is in no way a complete or accurate self-summary. Oh, and my name is Lauren. Hello.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Trying to teach 2nd graders how to read, making people laugh in live storytelling competitions on some weekends by sharing deep, dark, embarrassing secrets, getting my Master's from Northwestern at the same time, and figuring things out as I go along. Not ever looking to be content.
(This question isn't very sexy, is it?)
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
dancing, storytelling, cooking, drinking, writing, teaching, thinking too much, driving in Chicago traffic, parallel parking, taking things seriously and not seriously at all simultaneously, telling inappropriate jokes, making fun of myself, making fun of you, and keeping it really real.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Curly hair, lots of sass. The fact that I don't act like any elementary school teacher you ever had.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Music: Everything, but a lot of old school hip hop, punk, indie, soul and a serious weakness for 80s new wave (I even took off one Friday from work so I could go to New Wave Thursdays at Neo.) Maybe I should say everything except modern country. Wanna know specifics? Ask.

Books: The Last Picture Show, Madame Bovary, American Psycho, The Rum Diary, On the Road, Tropic of Cancer, Speak, Memory, and a lot more. Seriously, I have a lot of books that I'm sick of moving. I just read Norweigian Wood finally. So, we could talk about that if you are super deep and you want to be bummed out together.

Shows: Peep Show, The Wire, Party Down, Broad City, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Summer Heights High, Silicon Valley, and Louie currently.

Movies: Do the Right Thing, Rosemary's Baby, The Graduate, Bladerunner, City of God, Annie Hall, Boogie Nights, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Coming to America, and Fargo.

Food: I know all the good places in Chicago. Also, I love tacos.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Family, friends, books, music, travel, and self-deprecating humor.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
what I am going to do next in life, and not what I am going to write in response to this section of my profile.

Also, things I hear on RadioLab or the things I just read in Michelle Alexander's book The New Jim Crow.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
drinking whiskey with friends, maybe. But I'm definitely somewhere, and I'm happy.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I listen to a disturbing amount of R&B. You know, sexy music.
Sometimes I cancel plans with friends to have dance parties in my apartment alone.
I want someone who thinks these things are charming, and who might want to join me.

Honorable mention: my first crush was Jeff Goldblum, in both Jurassic Park and Independence Day. I still think I had pretty good taste for a young girl.
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You dance alone in your apartment, you can sustain jokes about imagined situations or conversations between people for uncomfortably long periods of time, you think everything is absurd, and you like to drink whiskey straight. Also, if you think we have something in common (or nothing in common at all, I like a challenge), you like to use your brain, and you want to get to know me more.
