What I’m doing with my life
I took the traditional route after graduating from high school: I moved away to college, picked a major, and then realized that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Unfortunately, I was going to a very expensive school so I decided to cut my losses after two and a half years and drop out. I spent the next few years traveling, meeting interesting people, and generally trying to figure out what I wanted out of life. Now I'm back in school, studying chemistry, and I plan on going to med school once I graduate.

I make my living as a bartender right now and appreciate the fact that my job allows me to meet a lot of interesting people.
The first things people usually notice about me
That I'm a real-life version of Mr. Clean, sans the earrings.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: I was a Russian major during my first stint in college, so I enjoy a lot of the classics of the Russian canon. I also have a soft spot for early 20th century Soviet fiction. Some of my favorites are The Master and Margarita, Envy, and A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. This list probably makes me sound a lot smarter than I actually am -- I likely wouldn't have read any of that stuff had it not been an academic requirement. They were tough books to work through, but reading them became labor of love. I'm very grateful that I had that privilege.

As far as non-Russian reading goes, some of my favorite authors are Joan Didion, Abraham Verghese, and Italo Calvino. I also love reading memoirs written by interesting people. And Harry Potter, of course!

Movies/TV: I'm a sucker for a good comedy. I'm only a bit ashamed to admit that I've seen Elf, The Hangover, and Step Brothers at least ten times. I also like a good historical or science documentary. Ken Burns and Carl Sagan really do it for me. Shows I watch regularly: 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Parks and Recreation, Community, Law & Order (SVU is my favorite, of course) and The League. I'm also a huge nerd, so I love Star Trek (TNG and Voyager are my favorites), Lexx, and, above all else, Battlestar Galactica.

Music: I grew up listening to country, and it's a vice that's stayed with me into adulthood. I also really enjoy Death Cab for Cutie, Sufjan Stevens, Emmylou Harris, The Decemberists, Massive Attack, The Knife, Passion Pit, and Miike Snow.

Food: Pretty much everything. I spent a summer teaching in South Korea, and the best part of that experience was the food. A word of advice: if you're not used to spicy food and find yourself hungry and on the streets of Seoul, please, PLEASE avoid the Dukppoki. I'm still sorting through the painful emotions that resulted from the first time trying that dish.
The six things I could never do without
Aside from the things necessary for physical and emotional survival:
-Iced Tea
-A computer/phone (duh!)
-Friends who have dogs. I love animals but can't stand the shedding, so I don't have one of my own.
-The tens of episodes of The Simpsons I have on my DVR that form the background when I'm doing chores or other boring tasks.
-Flipboard
-Public Radio variety/comedy shows like Wiretap and A Prairie Home Companion
On a typical Friday night I am
Usually working. Every once in a while having a beer with some friends.
