Non-fiction: Wilhelm Reich, Elaine Pagels, George Lakoff - generally science/religion/psychology/esoterica.
Fiction: the holy trinity of Bukowski, Fante, and Hamsun.
Philip K. Dick.
A few personal heroes: William S. Burroughs (who wrote me a letter once); Austin Osman Spare (no letters from him); my high school teacher (in the brief and sporadic periods I spent in this mostly wasted and corrupt American institution before going directly to college - even then I could only tolerate a small alternative school that taught a heavy dose of 80s-era feminism [unfortunate, mostly] and "real" history [fortunate]; yes this is still a parenthetical statement) who had a very long beard and graciously shared his acerbic sense of humor, healthy cynicism and skepticism, strong sense of self-love, and a nuanced and self-determined view of what it means to be a man; this old spiritualist woman I met as a teen and still think about regularly - she was, by far, the most genuinely spiritual person I have ever met; the aforementioned Wilhelm Reich and Elaine Pagels.
Pasolini, Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage.
