What I’m doing with my life
I'm a pretty recent returnee to Calgary after spending the last few years at school on the west coast, as well as working and travelling across the country and around the world. I enjoy being back here and catching up with old friends, exploring the city and starting my career.

After a few years in sleepy Victoria, I'm also trying to take advantage of a city that has (marginally) more stuff going on of the culture variety. I've been trying to see lots of music, art and film, to find new and interesting places to eat, and to get out to the mountains occasionally. Oh, and trying to figure out some of the finer points of crock pot cooking.
I’m really good at
Hiking/biking/walking/running
Discovering new and interesting music
Travelling to new and interesting places
Board games (well, I enjoy playing and am pretty okay with losing most of the time)
Being a good friend
Making food
Learning
Thrift/book/record store shopping
Butchering good songs at karaoke
The first things people usually notice about me
- shocking resemblance to Woody Allen, Elvis Costello or Buddy Holly.
- I can generally hold a pretty decent conversation... if that fails, I can at least share one of an array of embarrassing travel anecdotes
- I'm serious but self-effacing, thoughtful but not beyond laughing at the absurdity of the world
- absurd knowledge of random, useless pop culture trivia
- how much cats like me (despite, or perhaps because of, my crippling allergies to them)?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: fiction (lately stuff like Tom Perotta, David Mitchell, Jeffrey Eugenides), non-fiction (Retromania, The Rest is Noise, John Krakauer, Michael Lewis, history, politics, culture, travel), science fiction (Neal Stephenson, Philip K Dick, Connie Willis), newspapers and magazines

Movies: varied mix of documentaries, drama, horror and HBO/AMC, high brow and low brow, old and new... and anything Werner Herzog?

Music: I pretty much try to sample a little bit of everything and have come to realize that I prefer breadth to depth. Basically you can find me listening to anything from the old punk/post-punk I loved when I was 16 (Clash, X, Talking Heads), to West African funk (Fela Kuti, Amadou and Miriam), to modern classical (Steve Reich, Nico Muhly), to electronic, folk, jazz, hip hop, a little metal, ambient, anything really. Last few albums I've really liked:
-Los Piranas: Toma Tu Jabon Kapax
-Dan Deacon: America
-Philip Glass: Music With Changing Parts

Food: basically anything, but with a preference for spicy food; try to eat a healthy, balanced diet but occasionally succumb to cravings for bacon or Ben & Jerry's!
The six things I could never do without
Something to listen to music on
Something to read
Bike
Good friends
Good food
Internet connection is pretty handy too
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Life, art, music, what to buy at the grocery store, what hole in the ground Glen Beck crawled back into, what book to read, how to avoid being hit by cars when biking, how great it would be to abscond to Asia and float back and forth down the Mekong and then how bored I would ultimately get...
On a typical Friday night I am
In a pub or at a dinner party with friends, eating good food, watching a band, playing music, watching a movie
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
That I'm generally unwilling to admit anything private on a public forum that the entire world can see! I have a (probably tarnished) reputation to protect after all.
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 25–35
  • Near me
  • For new friends, long-term dating, short-term dating
You should message me if
You are bright, quirky, not too serious, educated, interested in some of the same things and aren't totally put off by my profile!
