My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
How would I characterize myself? Hmmmmm.......I'm free-spirited, fun, artistic, outgoing, easygoing, laid-back, funny (I've got my moments, at least), compassionate, passionate, thoughtful, caring, dedicated, motivated. I'm lucky to have several really good friends that I'm very loyal to and would do anything for. I have a large family, which has always been an important part of my life. At the beginning of this past August (2014), I had three big furry dogs. That month, I had to have my 14 year old Siberian husky put to rest. This past August I had to have my 16 and a half year old Norwegian elkhound put down. I'm now left with one big lovable 16 year old galoot named Satch. I believe he's part shar-pei (but doesn't look it), part bear and part buffalo. Losing two beloved members of my family in the span of 4 months has been mighty painful. I'm now doing my best to keep my old buddy Satch as comfortable and happy as I can in whatever time I have left with him.

UPDATE: Satch is still hanging' in there like a champ. I now have a new puppy to add to my pack. He's a Siberian husky and his name is Woodrow.

From an emotional standpoint, I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve, which makes me a pretty shitty liar. At the risk of sounding cocky, I am highly educated and consider myself a very intelligent person. I completed my doctorate in music (trumpet performance to be more specific) five years ago. It took a lot of effort to accomplish this and I'm not ashamed to say that I have received a great deal of personal satisfaction from having reached that milestone in my life.

What do I enjoy? First and foremost, music, but I'll get to that in the "What I'm doing with my life section." Aside from that, I love a great conversation and will talk your ear off if you let me. I love to cook when I have the time to do it right, especially when I can fire up the smoker for a backyard BBQ. I love hanging out with my friends. I love good beer. If I can combine all of the above mentioned activities, even better!! I like to hit the town and check out live music when I'm not the one actually playing the live music. I love great food and all of the killer restaurants that Austin has to offer. I'm a huge Longhorn fan. I love the outdoors, particularly camping and hiking. What else.......oh!! I also love to read, and do it often.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
If you haven't figured out by now, music has always been the driving force in my life. I am a professional musician and music teacher. I play trumpet regularly with several bands around town, and freelance a good bit as well. I typically have a project or two or three that I lead. As a composer, I enjoy the songwriting end of things, but have also written a good deal of instrumental jazz for various groups that I've led over the years, as well as horn section arrangements for various bands around town. I am very active as a music teacher and teach students at various middle schools and high schools around town. I am also the co-founder of a summer jazz improvisation workshop for middle/high school aged students.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Well, music....duh. I'm a good teacher. I'm good at making friends. I'm a good talker, but I'm a good listener as well. I'm a pretty good cook and am particularly gifted in the realm of the backyard BBQ (at least my friends seem to think so). Funny as it may sound, my smoked meatloaf is a huge hit. I'm moderately good at disc golf, but really crappy at real golf, although I'm not opposed to going out and embarrassing myself on occasion.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Probably my beard. It is one of the more prominent features of my facial landscape and I often get comments/compliments on it from people I've never met (although I have trimmed it down a good bit recently). After that, probably my eyes, which are somewhere between blue and grey. If I had to guess, I think people also notice my outgoing, friendly nature, which is probably why I've never had trouble making new friends.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
As I said earlier, I love to read. I enjoy novels of all sorts. Sometimes I enjoy serious literature like Steinbeck, Faulkner, Hesse, Jose Saramago. Sometimes I just like a good story that I don't have to think too hard about, like Stephen King, or maybe a fantasy novel. I read a good deal about music (journals, biographies, etc.). I also enjoy books on philosophy, spirituality, things of a metaphysical nature. I've read some Yogananda, Thich Naht Han, a lot of Osho. One of my all-time favorite novels is Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove." Great characters that stick with you. I'm also a huge fan of Tom Robbins and John Irving, particularly his earlier stuff.

I like most kinds of movies, as long as they are good. I'll just list a bunch: The Fisher King (and most anything Terry Gilliam), anything Monty Python, Dead Man, Amadeus, anything Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings, Pulp Fiction, anything Alfred Hitchcock, old Jimmy Stewart movies, Apocalypse Now, most anything with Jack Nicholson......the list goes on.

There are plenty of shows that I like to indulge in when I have the time. Here are some of them: Sports, particularly Longhorn football, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Gotham, Daily Show, Colbert Report (I will miss it), Louis (genius!), Arrested Development, BBQ Pitmasters, The Voice (I know, I know, it's a guilty pleasure, and, I've had a few friends that have been on it.).

The great Duke Ellington once said: "There are only two kinds of music....good music, and the other kind." I prefer good music. That said, here's a very select list: Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, BB King, Dr. John, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Phish, Willie Nelson, Bob Marley, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Joe Williams, Johnny Hartman, Frank Sinatra, Wynton Marsalis, The Who, The Allman Brothers, Derek Trucks, Johnny Cash, Cubanismo, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Beethoven, Mahler, Brahms, Strauss, Stravinsky, Sly and the Family Stone, Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Van Morrison.......I better stop now!!

Food runs the gamut as well. I guess if I had to choose a favorite it would be a toss-up between mexican food and BBQ. I love most food, though.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Music, family, friends, dogs, good food, books.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
You guessed I've always got some sort of music happening in my brain. It's the soundtrack to my life. I guess I also think a lot about what I want from life and how to go about getting it. These days, I'm also thinking a good bit about what my life is going to be like in the coming months.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Often playing music somewhere. When not doing that, I could be found out on the town watching other people play music, going to a movie, or having friends over for dinner, drinks and a good hang. Sometimes I get so busy that a quiet evening at home is just what the doctor ordered.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit

I have tattoos.

You enjoy seeing live music, dogs, camping, hiking, cooking, spending time with friends and a few cold beers, are a free spirit, laid back, and enjoy having fun.

If you are on the conservative right side of the political fence, are very religious and looking to meet someone who fits that mold, or if you are looking for a partner to have children with, I'm probably not your dude. It's totally cool if you already have children, I'm just not looking to add to the population myself.
