Though I'm a lover of good fiction, lately my academic and
non-fiction side has taken over and you're more likely to find me
reading Nietzsche, Aristotle, Judith Jarvis Thompson or social
histories of Rome and other early civilizations to help me brush up
for my students. For literature some of my favourites are
Dostoyevsky, Tomson Highway and Garcia Marquez.
Music is a huge love and passion in my life. It's often tough to
beat Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone and Neil Young. I do
love listening to everything new and wonderful too though, and some
of my current faves are The Antlers, Passion Pit, Cat Power, Big
Boi, Beach House, Frank Ocean, The Tallest Man on Earth, Santigold
and Chromatics. Live shows are great and music adds a whole big
bomb of happiness to everything for me.
For TV, I'm currently on The Wire, and I love Veep, Homeland and
Portlandia. HBO and AMC are great. For movies I've been a bit
disappointed with recent fare - would love to hear suggestions! My
taste is for good tight political thrillers or suspense (Spy Game,
Bourne, Manchurian Candidate, Skyfall, Memento) and I suppose great
dramas especially foreign ones (Pan's Labrynith, Bad Education, The
Mission, In the Mood for Love). Pedro Almodovar, Stanley Kubrick,
Sergei Eisenstein, Ang Lee, Wong Kar Wai, David Cronenberg.
For food, I honestly don't even know where to start. It's a good
thing that I actually love being active and working out because
otherwise it would be such a chore to burn off all the wonderful
meals I love to fill my life with. Cooking, eating out, its all
great. Chinese (Sichuan!), Korean (soon tofu!), French (wine,
meat!), Italian (everything, duh!), bbqs, steak frites, shrimp in
spicy tomato sauce, beef barley soup, salmon and quinoa, Indian,
Vietnamese, Mexican (mole!). Gonna just admit it now, food is a
quick shot of Cupid's arrow to my heart.
