I am Intellegent, Imaginative, and Postive.

My Self-Summary

I tend to ride the line between what is traditionally considered "right-brained" and "left-brained". My degrees are in Computer Science and English Literature, with a Creative Writing minor. I enjoy analytic challenges, particularly board games, but I also like creating things, such as web pages.

Despite my technology knowledge and interest, I enjoy the outdoors. I like to walk, bike, kayak, ski, and snowshoe. I'm a bit of an environmentalist, and mostly vegetarian. I like cats, though I am unfortunately allergic, so they have to live outdoors. I enjoy small groups and quiet gatherings rather than smokey bars and clubs. This carries over when I travel, as I'd rather be out exploring volcanoes, cliffs, and woods than immersed the local night life.

What I’m doing with my life

I've hopped around a bit, getting a B.S. and a B.A. from a small liberal arts college. I then worked as a programmer for a year before going back to graduate school for my master's degree. While there, I worked as a reference librarian in the graduate library.

I just completed the program this fall, and I know work for a web design company doing information architecture, a wonderful mix of both the analytical and creative elements of my personality. The best way I can describe my job is that I do for web pages what an architect does for buildings, with a focus on the user experience that a web interaction provides.

I recently found myself living on my own, so I'm looking for people to help fill my new spare time, especially those with similar interests.

I’m really good at

Games of all types, though strategy-intensive European board games are my favorite. I still play some video games here and there, though I'm not as good as I used to be when I was younger.

Web design, particularly architecting web sites.

Teaching, something I hope to do more of in the future.

Giving advice on technology.

Staying up late discussing a wide variety of topics.

The first things people usually notice about me

I think I have nice hair, and as it is longer than most guys it probably stands out. I like to think that I come off as being knowledgeable and friendly in conversations.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I tend to flow between non-fiction and fantasy; for some reason the middle-ground of realistic fiction doesn't tend to appeal to me as much. Recent reads include Don't Make Me Think and Confessor, though I'm a fan of authors like Douglas Adams and George R.R. Martin.

I'm still making my way through the Japanese-animated series One Piece, which I really enjoy. I never really lost my taste for cartoons as I grew up, though I do recognize that some of my old favorites from the 80s and 90s are perceived as being a bit cheesy. Netflix probably thinks I'm about 12 years old, but I don't mind, as it streams all sorts of old cartoons that I never had a chance to watch growing up.

I also enjoy some more geeky shows like Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and The Big Bang Theory. Lately I've been watching Dexter, which normally isn't my kind of show but is really well done.

I'm a fan of video games, from the physical (Rock Band, DDR, Wii Fit) to RPGs and a few action/adventure games (Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, etc), including games for older systems.

My musical interests generally include instrumental soundtracks, some geeky musicians like Jonathan Coulton, and random light rock/alternative bands that happen to appeal to me.

As I said, I'm mostly vegetarian, and enjoy a variety of ethnic foods. I'm a big fan of potatoes.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The future. There are so many paths I can take, and I often think about when the next big fork will appear and how I will deal with it.

I also like to design board games and story narratives in my head, though I have a harder time pushing them further than that. I have an easier time with tabletop RPG narratives, since I can push them forward every week (I'm currently involved in a White Wolf campaign).

I find "alternate" lifestyles, such as polyamory, quite interesting, and am happy to have conversations with people that follow them.

On a typical Friday night I am

Relaxing at home, perhaps with a small group of friends to play some games, talk, and/or watch a movie. Or I might be hiking through the woods or biking through a park. I am a fan of theater, and I enjoy going out to watch plays as well.

You should message me if

You live in the area, and are interested in some of the same things I am. I enjoy meeting people with shared interests and/or values.

You are interested in getting together to play board games, particularly ones that take some thinking (Catan, Dominion, A Game of Thrones, etc). I already have a couple groups I play with, but I'm always happy to find new gamers (as long as you are both a gracious winner and loser; games should be fun).

I seem like someone you would like to get to know better.
