My self-summary
I'm kindof a dog-lover these days--just adopted one of my own, & love those of family & friends. I'm a leftie, something of an intellectual, and relish having and maintaining deep connections to the people in my life. I'm looking for an incisive person who has a sense of fun. I'm charmed by wit and wordplay & I like to laugh.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm not-very-retired...I work 20 hours/week as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I'm still trying to get fluent in Spanish for the upteenth time. Having balance in my life is really important to me these days. I like to keep the humming bird feeder full and to go for nice long dog-walks at Fort Funston Beach in SF.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
The last book that really surprised me (in a good way) was a history about the last Comanche war chief, Empire of the Summer Moon, by SC Gwynne. The last movie I really liked was a little Israeli film called The Footnote. KCSM, the jazz station, is usually on my car radio (unless preempted by Amy Goodman doing Democracy Now). I like all kinds of restaurants.
The six things I could never do without
Being in loving relationships with close friends.
Fiction and poetry.
The wisdom to do self-care--without health, you have such a narrow horizon.
Non-fiction, especially history. And, why not admit it, I'm drawn to esoteric subversive social theory...once a Marxist, always a Marxist (of sorts, anyway).
Ripe peaches now and then.
Having some kind of a political practice, and some kind of a meditation practice to balance it out.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My latest homebody project--how to hang the nice quilt my sister made for me on its new Japanese screen.
I think a lot about war, and how it perverts everything in our society.
What to name my new dog--the shelter staff in Calaveras County named her Sidney, but I think it doesn't fit her--way too upscale...I'm polling everyone for ideas, the best one so far, is Django (after the jazz guitarist, I think that's how it's spelled)...but now I've settled on Laja, short for lajaiin, which is Arabic for refugee, & has a nice soft sound.
On a typical Friday night I am
There is no typical one...last Friday I went for a long walk on the Lands' End trail, and then out to dinner at my local Hong Kong style Chinese restaurant, where I had my usual rock cod, which they get out of the tank & cook up on the spot.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm just going to use this space to clarify: I dropped out of not one but TWO PhD programs! Okay, so much for full disclosure....
