I like books that can also be used as weapons. Please interpret
that however you like.
Books (in the oder they occur to me):
The Karamazov Brothers, The Idiot, Anna Karenina, Dead Souls,
Fathers and Sons, The House of the Spirits, Of Love and Other
Demons, One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Myth of Sisyphus, The
Second Sex, poetry of Anna Akmanova, Into the Wild, The Awakening,
The Bell Jar, "The Yellow Wallpaper," A Room with a View, The
Scarlet Letter, Autobiography of a Face, Nicholas and Alexandra,
The Romanovs: The Final Chapter, Harry Potter, Extremely Loud and
Incredibly Close, Frankenstein, Dracula, Jane Eyre, The Unbearable
Lightness of Being, Middlesex
And then there is the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Which I love in a
fiercely devotional kind of way
My friends tease me that all of the music and movies I like are
generally really depressing. That's...not an inaccurate assessment.
If there isn't a seed of despair at the heart of it, what's the
Having said that, I do like some movies that aren't depressing
(they just don't tend to be my favorite).
Pan's Labyrinth, The Lives of Others, Amelie, BBC Jane Eyre, Star
Wars, Miyazaki movies. (There are totally others, but I'm blanking
at the moment.)
The Magnetic Fields, The XX, Vast, Neutral Milk Hotel, Regina
Spektor, Radiohead, MIA, Andrew Bird, Iron and Wine, Florence and
the Machine, Tegan and Sara, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Cat Power, Fiona
Apple, Nine Inch Nails, Tom Waits.
I mostly watch TV shows on Netflix, which means marathoning TV
shows, being obsessed with them for a few weeks, and then relaxing
my obsession for a while. AND! Most of my TV choices aren't
depressing! I tend to like TV that's either funny, stupid, or
exciting (or some combination thereof). Maybe because I like so
much depressing music/film/reading?
Battlestar Galactica (!), Star Trek (TNG, DS9, Voyager), Buffy,
Angel, Firefly, Better of Ted, Twin Peaks, Arrested Development,
Engineering an Empire, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, The Walking Dead,
It's Always Sunny, Bob's Burgers, Archer, X-Men (from the 90's;
it's terrible, and I don't care), cooking shows, historical
documentaries and shit.
I love food. I'm really open to trying new things (for the most
part). I am in a constant state of desiring Thai Curry. Spicy food
is the best. And Pizza has always been there for me.
