My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
UPDATE - Just moved to Lewisburg, PA to take a job at Bucknell and while I really like my colleagues, they're all just slightly older and more married with kids than me. So, pretty much looking for new friends. I actually am dating a pretty rad girl (yes OKC does actually work) who's on the west coast, so friendship is all I'm interested in at the moment but I'm always down for a drink! I hear that liquor laws in PA suck. Lets complain about it over a brew.

----

When I was in Thailand a few years back, one of my favorite things to do was to go to an outdoor bar in the heart of the city called "Cheap Charlie's". The place always had expatriates and travelers from around the world. I would just go there, buy a beer and start talking to people and ask them what their stories were. Most were nice, some were mean, some were crazy, but everybody had a story to tell. I talked to a Scandinavian businessman about how toastmasters changed his career. I talked to a British school teacher about how "The Wire" was the best show on television through a massive monsoon.

That story more or less encapsulates who I am. I’ve been told before that I have an “easy-going charm.” I'm also smart, witty, and a little quirky (but in the good make you laugh way). Why else would I consent to 5+ years of extra school to get a non-white coat-wearing "Doctor" title before my name? Because of all these traits, I make friends and keep friends easily, and I have best friends all over the world.

To be honest, the online dating thing isn't ideal, but cest la vie. I've learned to live with it. I've probably made more good friends from OkC than lovers, and that's been pretty cool too. So if you're reading this and we do end up getting together, even for a quick drink, I can promise at the very least a good conversation with a cool guy, and maybe a good book recommendation. After that, it's all gravy.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Indoctrinating young minds with knowledge, navigating the shitty waters of peer review.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Connecting with people, helping people feel better about themselves, conversation (which is distinct from talking - conversation takes two), political trivia, making friends with cats (and most dogs), making friends with humans (and most robots), reading really really really fast, and I've been told I'm pretty good at cooking Thai food. I'm also really good at writing personal essays (think David Sedaris), which I put on a personal blog that I only reveal to strangers.

Oh, and for reasons I haven't quite been able to identify, old people love me. It makes me think that maybe I should've been a politician, but alas, too many hookers and too much blow.

And, finally, I am excellent at Cards Against Humanity, which, I guess, makes me a horrible person. Oh well.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I dress rather well. Also, I'm a pretty charming sob.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Books - I am almost always lugging around a tome like work of non-fiction at any given time. People are often shocked to learn that I'd read something like this for fun. Did I mention that I'm a nerd? I also like the works of David Sedaris, Michael Chabon, Dave Barry, Robert Caro, Ha Jin, John Steinbeck, George Orwell, and Michael Lewis.

Movies - The Star Wars Trilogy, the Indiana Jones Trilogy, the Back to the Future Trilogy, The Godfather 1 and 2 (see I don't just like trilogies), just about anything by Hayao Miyazaki, Shall We Dance, Hannah and Her Sisters, Swingers

Music - I have a really strange obsession with girl pop music, both good and bad, so Taylor Swift may or may not be on my iphone at any given time. I can neither confirm nor deny these rumors.

As for stuff I'm not ashamed of: Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Who, Wilco, U2, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, New Order, Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol, R.E.M., Queen, Ben Folds, Muse, Sufjan Stevens, The White Stripes, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Death Cab For Cutie, James, The Decemberists, Beck, Joe Hisaishi, Daft Punk, Old School Rap, Weird Al Yankovic, Jamiroquai.

Food - Italian, Thai, American, Japanese, Korean BBQ, anything BBQ really. I could probably eat linoleum if you gave me BBQ sauce with it.

TV - The Wire, 30 Rock, Mad Men, Fringe, The Daily Show, Arrested Development, Battlestar Galactica, How I Met Your Mother, Game of Thrones, The League, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Sherlock

Radio - This American Life, The Dan Savage Podcast, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me, NPR
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
I actually kind of hate this section because any legit answer sounds overly sarcastic (food, water, air), any specific answer sounds overly materialistic (my iphone, my laptop) and any non-specific answer sounds hokey and overly sentimental (free will, positive vibes, compassion).

Though I would totally die without coffee. Not a clean death either. In a nasty way, like when a vampire gets staked in True Blood.

Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.

doing the same thing we do every night, Pinky. Trying.... to take over the WORLD!

I think female pant suits are totally hot. Maybe it's a Hillary Clinton thing.
