I'm very lucky to have the happy friends and family that I do, and I love talking with them about the big and little things in life. I've been described as a hot nerd and an existentialist cheerleader. Words thrill me, and I really enjoy teaching and wordplay with young people. Obama makes me weak in the knees.

Teaching the children. Spending time with people I deeply enjoy and admire. Furnishing my new apartment. Walking along Vermont. Listening to NPR. Reading. Writing.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

This is many categories in one box. Okay. The go-to favorite since seventh grade has been To Kill a Mockingbird; I also loved Kafka on the Shore, The Red Tent, A History of Love, and the last chapter of Anna Karenina. Clearly, the best movie ever is Back to the Future, with Better Off Dead coming in a close second. Music? Such joy! I'm scrolling through my iPod: Aimee Mann, Beastie Boys, Ben Harper, Cake, David Byrne, Feist, Jay Z, Julieta Venegas, Manu Chao, Ozomatli, Sharon Jones, Stevie Wonder, Sufjan Stevens, Weezer, Wilco. Food: I pretty much eat whatever Trader Joe feeds me. I met him once. He was delightful, and wore a pink bow tie. (I am a huge fan of good food, and would like to make more of it from scratch.)

The six things I could never do without

Love, appreciation, laughter, human connection, words, mashed potatoes.

How best to teach certain concepts, how to get students to think critically about the world, dinner.

On a typical Friday night I am

sweating in a yoga class. Or having dinner with friends. Or watching a movie in a movie theater. Or strolling through my new neighborhood.

I think online dating is a fun way to meet people we otherwise never would; what makes two people blush and get excited about each other is random, unfathomable, and insanely illogical, so I just go into each experience with no expectations other than to enjoy a conversation with someone with a new perspective.
