I am boring, underwhelming, and self-deprecating.

My Self-Summary

I embraced my inner geek several years ago after a long stretch of living in denial. After a childhood of comic books, Star Wars uber-fandom and college-level computer programming classes while still in grade school, I traded in my geek cred to be the poetry-writing football player in high school and the budding literature academic in university. Once out in the real world, I harmonized my two selves, rediscovering my love for all things sci-fi, supplementing my Moby Dick with the Dark Knight and diversifying my vocabulary with such words as "frak", "frell" and "shiny".

But I'm not all comic cons and opening night line-ups. I get rather heated about the state of local transit, think SUVs are of the devil and understand the nuances of Canadian parliamentary democracy. I'm as likely to rant about the municipal budget and the state of health care as I am about how Star Wars: Clone Wars would have been the worst piece of garbage committed to celluloid if The Phantom Menace hadn't already been made.

Finally, I love to cycle and go camping and play sports. I just don't do these things often enough.

In short, I like to think of myself in the terms given by Heraclitus: "Everything flows and nothing abides, everything gives way and nothing stays fixed."

(Well, the Dude abides, but he's it.)

What I’m doing with my life

When not saving the world from tyranny or babies from burning buildings, I live a mild-mannered life as a web programmer for a major Canadian university.

I’m really good at

...making fun of myself. You'll find no one better at self-deprecation. But, I'm also a little brother, so I'm good at dishing out, too. Be warned.

The first things people usually notice about me

Honestly, I have no idea. I can tell what I'd like them to notice: my high wattage smile, that I'm the most laid-back, generous, sweetest guy you'll ever meet. Chances are, though, that they probably notice my unicorn horn before any of that stuff.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: H2G2, The Time Traveller's Wife, American lit of the 1800s and early 1900s, anything my book club tells me to read, books about the Holocaust (a holdover from my MA studies).

Movies: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Star Wars (original trilogy), the Chris Nolan Batman films, Serenity, Die Hard 1 and 4, the Bourne Films, Schindler's List, Terms of Endearment (no, really!), any rom com.

TV: BSG (RIP), Lost, Firefly, X-Files, Fringe, Life on Mars (UK), Leverage, Merlin, Farscape

Music: Alabama3, Interpol, Killers, New Pornographers, The Who, Lily Allen (I'm comfortable with my dirty little secrets).

Food: Cajun, Mexican, Italian, Greek, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Thai... I guess you could say I'm not a picky eater.

The six things I could never do without

1. my friends
2. my pets
3. the internet
4. jeans
5. my magic sofa (it all but induces naps)
6. Moby Dick (best book ever written)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Life, the universe and everything....

On a typical Friday night I am

Curled up on the couch watching the latest Doctor Who episode or a good movie, having made a scrumptious dinner, maybe drinking a beer. I'm a pretty low-key guy on Friday night. On Saturday, though....

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

What? The Lily Allen admission above wasn't enough? Okay, okay... let's see. How about this: I haven't had a good night's sleep in years. A usual sleep for me lasts about five hours. (Okay, so it's not an underwear fetish or my bank PIN, but it's pretty private.)

You should message me if

You like your men geeky. Like, really geeky. Like almost nerdy, but without the poindexterism.
