My name's Neal. I'm from Chicago, and moved to Columbus about four
years ago for school. So I'm a Midwestern city kinda guy. I enjoy
stupid puns, nerdy things, exercising, playing with my dog, and
dreaming of one day living near a few mountains.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm currently studying mathematics at Ohio State. I should be
finishing up my Ph.D. program in the next year or so, and after
that I'll be pursuing an academic career. It's a difficult path,
but few things are as satisfying as solving a difficult problem and
learning something new. Teaching has been pretty neat, too.
In my spare time, I play a lot of soccer, pay way too much for
fancy beer, go to a few movies, read more math, read a few books
here or there, cook, and watch too much TV with my roommates.
I’m really good at
Playing guitar, math, squatting, cooking, eating what I just
cooked, making my friends laugh, and, occasionally, soccer.
I really enjoy explaining mathematics to other people, and I'd like
to think I'm good at it, but sometimes a smile and a nod really
means "I have no idea what you're saying!"
The first things people usually notice about me
I would almost certainly assume it's my red hair/pale skin/utter
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm picky with music. I grew up listening to a lot of metal, and
the habit has stuck with me. Outside of that, my favorites are
Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Yes, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Michael Jackson,
and Paco de Lucia.
I am the opposite with food. There are very few things I don't like
to eat. My favorite foods are barbecued meats, Cajun food, and
I've watched a lot of TV shows; probably more than is healthy for
any human. My favorites are The Wire, The Shield, Breaking Bad, The
Simpsons, The West Wing, Sports Night, and Arrested Development. 24
also has a special place in my heart, and I only too recently
discovered Freaks and Geeks.
Books? Well, there's the obligatory inclusion of The Lord of the
Rings, and I'm enjoying the hell out of A Dance with Dragons right
now. I should probably throw in Childhood's End, Crime and
Punishment, and Watership Down. (Yes, I just mentioned aliens, axe
murderers, and journeying bunnies in the same sentence. Deal with
It seems like there are both too many and too few movies to list,
but the ones that come to mind are No Country for Old Men, The Big
Lebowski, American History X (in all its melodramatic glory), and
Jurassic Park (which I make sure to watch at least once per year).
The six things I could never do without
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The d-bar problem. How to explain the d-bar problem to people
without boring them to death. How to explain difficult concepts to
my students. Why my dog doesn't like other dogs. How much longer I
might be in graduate school, and what I might do when I finally get
out. When I can squeeze in time (and find the money) to go to
Europe. What the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow is.
On a typical Friday night I am
Almost certainly having a few drinks somewhere. Possibly staying in
and playing a board game or cards.

OK, for real, you should message me if you want to get to know
someone new, or you want to discuss something in my profile, or if
you just outright hate my guts. That's all perfectly fine.
