I am peanut, peanut butter, and jelly.

My Self-Summary

I just moved to Portland for a change of scenery as I write my PhD dissertation. So far, I'm unpacking boxes upon boxes, meeting up with friends to explore the corners of this city, and maybe watching too much 30 Rock.

I’m really good at

Inserting pop culture references everywhere.
Being random.
Grammar (I am a freelance manuscript editor).
Listening and supporting.
Keeping life colorful.

The first things people usually notice about me

I wear glasses.
I'm chubby.
I'm smiling!

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Although I have more books than the average bear, being a grad student has in some ways ruined my ability to really read. I am in the habit of looking for main ideas, support, and organization--which works poorly for appreciating fiction, or even creative nonfiction. I also am attracted to books on a superficial level: cover design, typography, the feel of the paper--these things mean a lot to me.

Honestly, right now I'm reading a lot of Portland travel guides and then exploring from there.

My music taste is eclectic, as it is for most people. I think ultimately, though, I respond to that traditional pop verse-chorus-verse thing. And then I like music that plays with, or layers over, that structure. Recently, I've been listening to Tegan & Sara, George Harrison, and T.Rex. I also like the blues!

Since moving to Portland, I've decided to try as many ginger ales as I can--it seems to be on a lot of menus, and there's interesting varieties in stores. I like them all so far. My palate is clearly not yet very discerning.

I watch Rachel Maddow on MSNBC almost every day. Big fan.

The six things I could never do without

My friends: They are my chosen family.
My camera: I take pictures of honestly everything.
Music: Somehow, some way.
A library card: What can't this get you?
A pillow: Zzzzz.
A rotating sixth item, depending on the situation :)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Academically and personally (and vaguely!): I like looking at one thing as if it were another. Cause maybe it is. I want to understand why we have trouble naming the things that connect us and give us meaning.

On a typical Friday night I am

Finding an art opening to go to, getting a drink with friends, maybe puttering around the house.

You should message me if

you have a dorky sense of humor. I do, for sure.
