Crap. This category is too unstructured. I'm freezing up. Okay, here goes: I like balmy nights when the pavement is wet from the rain. And cooking at home with a friend. I like designing but not implementing. If I could have an extra life I would want to be a scientist. A physicist, maybe. I like the 30 seconds of fear/excitement but not the three hours of paperwork afterwards. I like being sneaky but I don't like to lie or cheat. I'm naively trusting. I like old things and old places. Places that remember. I like kindness and I like doing the right thing when the right thing is hard.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm a police detective. It's the job I've wanted since I was a kid and I'm happy to have it. I look forward to going to work and miss it when I get sick or go on vacation. When not working I read, walk in old neighborhoods and cemeteries, and do a little light programming. I was designing and building furniture for myself but I'm done now.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Neal Stephenson is my favorite author but the dude is in need of an editor. Other than that I mostly read history books, Elizabethan history in particular.
Some of my favorite movies are Raising Arizona, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Mystery Men, The Matrix, The Royal Tenenbaums, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Donnie Darko.
My list of favorite bands changes frequently but currently I listen to Band of Horses, Modest Mouse and Regina Spektor
Foodwise, I like most anything not hot. Can't handle hot. By hot I mean spicy. I guess bbq is my biggest weakness. And bratwursts. Don't get me wrong, though, I'm not anti-plant. I'm a big fan of raw spinach and cooked collards. And anyway you can't really eat collards raw.

The six things I could never do without

a pen and pad of paper, map or gps (I'm spatially retarded), a good pair of shoes for wandering, a pack of gum, I don't know. I'm spent. Pants.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

how things work, why events occurred, optimizing results, what I would do if the city was threatened by a sinister terrorist plot and only I could stop it

On a typical Friday night I am

working, but I see what you're getting at. During my free evenings I like to cook, go for a walk, read or see a movie.
