Lost in the woods, my pants are on fire, and I have no water.
My self-summary Propose an edit
I'm a quivering ball of anxious, inarticulate neurosis wrapped in a
loose and almost comfortable layer of eloquent elitist pedantry.
I'm antisocial and deeply introverted, but because my career is
largely social in nature, I've had to learn coping mechanisms that
include extroversion and good networking skills. I'm moody,
empathetic, and crave companionship (socially, emotionally,
romantically, and sexually), but am often seen as either crudely
silly or aloof. The insightful of my friends would know that I
often (though not always) use my crude and silly humor as a way to
distance myself from my peers, and that my aloofness is usually my
subconscious trying really hard to entice people to pull me out of
my shell.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
Wasting my precious childhood in school.
...and wasting time here (since I should be doing my
readings for school).
I'm really good at Propose an edit
According to the reactions I get from my friends, I'm very good at
saying things that sound like they should mean something but are
somehow unintelligible. Funny, that's the reaction I have to most
of what they say.
Things that I really like to do, some of which I am good at:
playing the (French) Horn, calligraphy, teaching, finding
obscure, difficult, or invisible things such as four-leaf clovers
or odd tidbits that lurk in the corners of the internet.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
I suspect that one of the things that distinguishes people is that
they all notice subtly different things in the people they meet and
know. Many people likely notice some of the same things about me,
but you'd have to ask them. Or notice things yourself. That seems
more reliable.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Books: I've been a sucker for Ursula Le Guin's books since I
was a little kid. Even the book that turned me on to her then, A
Wizard of Earthsea, continues to amaze me with its insight and
depth. I also like the bits of the literature I've read from JRR
Tolkien, Tad Williams, Roger Zelazny, Kurt Vonnegut Jr, Neal
Stephenson, and I'm getting tired of typing names so I'll stop
here. I confess that I essentially stopped reading for pleasure
when I started college; this will someday be the subject of a new
year's resolution.
Movies: I love what work of Jean-Pierre Jeunet
(Amélie and Delicatessen) that I've gotten to watch,
and thought Terry Gilliam's Brazil was a whole lot of
fun.
Music: As a musician, I suppose my taste is probably a bit
strange, but it's the only taste I know. My favorite composer is
Giacinto Scelsi,
but I also go for Schönberg, Mahler, Messiaen, Bach, and Beethoven. Without
any of them, I don't think I could be who I am today. Perhaps
especially Bach and Beethoven. If I could go back in time and only
visit one musician from the past, I'd be hard pressed to choose
between Brahms and Schönberg. Favorite musicians
that you're more likely to recognize include Björk, Tori Amos, John
Coltrane, Laurie
Anderson. Currently obsessed with Rev. Horton Heat. I'm also deeply
fascinated by some of the musicians I have the honor to work with
on a regular basis. A few of them may become famous.
Food: I love food. I cannot become vegan or vegetarian for
love of seafood and lamb. I cannot abide any of the various
protein-heavy carbohydrate-limiting diets for love of lentils,
rice, and bread. I like spice; and though I can tolerate very hot
spices, I prefer to think about taste than heat. Garlic, sage and fennel are keys to
my palate, and I have a mild addiction to vinegar.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
I can be frugal and only need a couple or a few things. But If I'm
feeling a little bit greedy, may I require seven or eight? In that
case, my continued existence depends upon -- and without which I
would probably disappear in a puff of steam -- the availability of
garlic, words,
things I don't quite understand, tea, water, chocolate. I feel like I'm stretching
to add more, so maybe I'm not feeling particularly greedy about my
needs today.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
How to be less cynical. This is tough because 90% of my humor can
be boiled down to cynicism and bad puns.
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
Practicing my scales, arpeggios, and long tones. Or procrastinating
and reading xkcd.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
Almost all of my answers to the match questions are about three
years old; I think I've answered about 150 or so questions since
then. In that time, I've changed from Poolboy to The Backrubber to
The Loverboy, and suspect that our match ratings are perhaps not as
accurate as they could be.
Also, I should mention that my identification here on OKCupid is
somewhat misleading: I identify as bi, because I am occasionally --
if rarely -- attracted to men. I list myself as straight here
because my attraction has yet to manifest itself to any men on this
site.

Is this a question of compulsion or impulsion? Is it relevant? Give
it a shot, but please forgive me if I don't answer.
In spite of how busy I am, I'm interested in meeting people, and
will usually find time to meet. I am a lousy correspondent.
