My Self-Summary
I'm a half-Irish and half-Chinese cat born and raised in New York City. Proud to be from the greatest city in the world. With that in mind, I'm a big fan of walking and exploring. Even though I was born here in the city, I'm always on the look out for new things to do, see, and, perhaps most importantly, eat. Also, going to museums for new exhibits- I used to go to the museum for my birthday when I was a kid. I love sitting on roofs late at night, debating and random words. Also, late-night talking about nothing and everything. I follow the saying "Think globally. Act locally."
I host a trivia night every Thursday. It's wonderful and I love it- I'm a bit like Alex Trebek. If you don't like trivia, maybe you should just move on.
Hey, Vampire Weekend! I give a fuck about an oxford comma. They're amazing. So shut the fuck up and give Paul Simon back his sound.
A very good friend of mine recently had sandwiches with me in a great shop in Albany and said, "You know who you remind me of? John Cusack's character in High Fidelity." He couldn't explain why. However, I think I'm a little bit more like a cross between A.J. and Lucas from Empire Records, except that I'm not that into Liv Tyler and not quite so mopey.
I have a bit of a credo: "It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees." Emiliano Zapata said that.
I would say that the closest thing to my heart is writing and reading- always looking for new books, films, music, and art.
P.S.- I'm not sure how it is determined that I am in fact "aggressive," but I don't really see that. I suppose I may not be the most sedated person, but I'm certainly not going to punch random people in the street for giving me the "eye". Just to rectify and clear up my good, online name.
What I’m doing with my life
Free-lancing in what? Well, currently, I've been working for fashion designers as a copywriter (and I deeply don't care about fashion); you know those blurbs on websites and catalogues that describe products. Yours truly. Soul-sucking work...but it's the best I can do for now.
I’m really good at
The first things people usually notice about me
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
books: James Joyce's Ulysses. Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Pablo Neruda's Residence on Earth. Jorge Luis Borges' Labyrinths. Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara. Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx. Anne Sexton's Transformations. Kathy Acker's Great Expectations. I just sunk my teeth into the awesome 2666 by Roberto Bolaño I know it's been just a year since it was released in English here, but I'm so far behind on my reading.
music: I'll only list the absolute heroes and what I've been listening to lately; anything else, check out http://www.last.fm/user/RogerThornhill/ Bob Dylan. Talking Heads. Paul Simon. The Fiery Furnaces. Beirut. Iron & Wine. Fiona Apple. Neutral Milk Hotel- call me what you want, but In the Aeroplane Over the Sea might be the greatest album ever created. Ben Sollee. Four of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life are: Joanna Newsom's Cosmia, anyone's version of Hallelujah (it's easily my favorite song, and I absolutely adore Leonard Cohen- partially because I sound like him), Maria Callas' rendition of O mio babbino caro and Enrico Caruso singing Vesti la giubba. Also, Matt & Kim are the closest thing to the perfect couple from the outside: they're always silly, smiling, energetic and support each other. That's also how I would describe their music catalogue.
films: foreign films. absurdist comedies. Alfred Hitchcock. Quentin Tarantino. Luc Besson. David Lynch. Wes Anderson. David Cronenberg. Dziga Vertov; Man with a Movie Camera = best film ever made. Luis Buñuel. Francois Truffaut. Spike Lee. Stanley Kubrick. Christopher Guest. Jean-Luc Godard. Citizen Kane. Right after seeing Garden State in theatres, I said to myself: "This is going to be a seminal movie; the kind of thing that will change my life." I was right. Harold and Maude. On the Waterfront; really, anything with Marlon Brando. I'm convinced Indiana Jones would beat the hell out of James Bond, and will debate the validity of that statement until I die.
food: I try to be a pescetarian, with some success, but I sometimes struggle. tea. coffee; real coffee from small cafes. Italian. French. Ethiopian. sushi, esp. futo-maki.. brick-oven pizza. I have a deep hatred for all major coffee chains, but especially Starbucks. peanut butter! Anything with apple, except for those jelly apple rings (I don't really like chewy things).
misc.: Flight of the Conchords. The Twilight Zone. The X-Files. Rachel Maddow. Keith Olbermann. Bill Maher. The Colbert Report. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. John Leguizamo. Chris Rock. Lewis Black. Anthony Bourdain. Jeopardy. Nightline. Sérgio Vieira de Mello. João Magueijo. Bill Moyers. webcomics like Questionable Content, Dinosaur Comics, A Softer World, Dr. McNinja, Least I Could Do, Scary Go Round and Diesel Sweeties.
I think it's a shame I have so few women on this list; I think it just goes to show you how far we have to go in the world.
