I am creative, smart-assed, and often articulate.

My Self-Summary

I am an artist with some type-a tendencies (those being the very-organized more than the control-freak sort). I am usually the first to laugh at myself, but I can handle when others laugh, too. I moved to Chicago in 2002 to get my MFA and never left.

I love live music and try to go a few times a month. I have been called a foodie (I'm only unwilling to try foods I'm allergic to); I love restaurants and being cooked for, and can even get into impressing someone (or trying) with my own cooking -- and I don't mind doing the dishes (okay, not at a restaurant, maybe).

I wouldn't trade a single friend or family member of mine if you paid me, despite their quirks. If you ask me what I think, I will try to be sensitive, but I will always be honest.

I love trying new things, though I don't consider myself wild...most of the time. I am addicted to travel and almost always up for a weekend roadtrip.

What I’m doing with my life

Until mid-Sept, I oversaw an artist residency program in Chicago with nine artists-in-residence. I am now working on creating a new, non-profit residency program for artists, writers, and performers in Chicago (and a component which sends Chicagoans off to make work and then return). I also make letterpress printed posters, and books, and ceramic sculpture... the books are sometimes made out of clay. I write...ish. I like fiction and run-on sentences (and ellipses)...

I've been house-hunting with the hopes of buying a place before winter, but I am willing to wait for the perfect place (I don't mind my apt.). I am traveling to the SF Bay Area for two weeks (Oct 16-Nov 1), Manhattan (Nov 3-9), and New Orleans (Nov 11-15)! I am also (slowly) working on an abecedarium of music-related locations in Chicago.

My best friend and I are planning a trip for our 40th birthdays in December. We considered a tropical island, but now we are leaning towards Amsterdam...

I’m really good at

...laughing and making others laugh.
...being sarcastic.
...writing letters.
...finding the perfect gift.
...researching creative things.
...detailed descriptions.
...remembering important events.
...harmonizing (but it takes a lot for me to do it in front of others).
...organizing.
...eating (and describing the experience).
...encouraging/helping others to do things they want to do but don't know how.

I can also blow really big bubbles with a good piece of bubblegum. (Classy, I know!)

The first things people usually notice about me

My eyeglass frames. That I look young(er). Sometimes my eyes themselves.

They usually notice my attitude after a bit. And my tenacity. And my rapier wit...

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

pretty much any art reference or art coffee table book; otherwise, mostly fiction -- The Phantom Tollbooth, One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Snow Crash, Observatory Mansions, The Alchemist, Still Life with Woodpecker, Barrel Fever, Everything is illuminated...I have a pile...

(A-Z thanks to Netflix:) Amelie, Being John Malkovich / Bourne or Bond series, Cinema Paradiso, Dangerous Liaisons / Desperado, Enchanted / Elizabeth, Fargo / The Full Monty, Genghis Blues, Heathers, Il Postino / Iron Man, Juno / Jamon, Jamon, Kinky Boots, Life & Times of Frieda Kahlo, Muriel's Wedding, The Notorious Bettie Page, O Brother Where Art Thou, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, The Royal Tenenbaums, Secretary / Saving Grace / Stranger Than Fiction / Stealing Beauty, Triplets of Belleville, Under the Tuscan Sun, Volver, Waitress / Walk the Line, Y tu mama tambien.

Neko Case, Andrew Bird, Kelly Hogan, Marya Lawrence, Bloodshot Records, The Beatles, Erik Lawrence, Nora O'Connor, Kevin O'Donnell, Jon Rauhouse, Jon Langford, Alejandro Escovedo, Son Volt, Diana Krall, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Indigo Girls, Elvis Costello, Beck, Bonnie Raitt, ALL/Descendents, Billie Holiday, Liz Phair, Robert Cray, Operation Ivy, Ryan Adams, PJ Harvey, Charlie Parker, Graham Parson, Merge, Etta James, KD Lang, Los Lobos, They Might Be Giants, even an orchestra performing the Brandenburg Concertos....

Mmmm, a really fresh spicy scallop hand roll or chirashi bowl (Japanese); a thick medium-rare filet mignon or carpaccio (red meat); Kumamotos or Malpeques on the half-shell (fresh seafood); the guac, ceviche or special skirt steak at Los Nopales (Mexican food); an old-fashioned grilled cheese sandwich; lentils, beets, pretty much any veggie or fruit; ice cream (mint-chip or coffee, preferably)....

The six things I could never do without

1. art supplies
2. books
3. friends and family
4. music
5. good coffee
6. humor
(not in order of significance)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

...homes/buildings. And art projects -- mine and those of others. And traveling. And a book or two I'd like to be reading right at that moment. And all those other things I've got to take care of. And...

On a typical Friday night I am

exhausted but looking forward to the weekend. Often I'm out with friends, maybe seeing music, having a few drinks or having dinner. Sometimes I am curled up in front of my most recent Netflix delivery relaxing, or with a book if I am out of unwatched dvds.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Come on. The most private thing I am willing to admit here is that I am filling all this out, like it's a damn college application!

You should message me if

You love laughing in the rain, but not pina coladas. Okay. I mean if you have good personal hygiene, have been employed in the last year, and read books of your own volition. Can you tell I am super-picky? Seriously, you should contact me if you like laughing _at_ as well as _with_, if like doing new things or some of what I already like to do, if you aren't originally from Chicago (though I'm not afraid of Chicagoans either).

Just for clarification, you should NOT message me if you have _bad_ personal hygiene, hate to read, are a super-picky eater, hate travel, and are obsessed with staying in Chicago (I _love_ Chicago, but there are other places out there, to check out!). Also if you are a hardcore Republican.
