My self-summary
I love to read. I love visiting museums, especially art and history ones. I have an irreverent and sometimes sarcastic sense of humor. I can't see myself dating a Republican (and not in a weird Libertarian way, either). I sew and embroider kind of artsy quilts. I grew up in the Valley, was away for 12 years - NYC and Miami, then came back two years ago. Being back here is not what I had planned, but it has some really good things about it like spending time with my parents, a more peaceful pace of life, and the mountains.
What I’m doing with my life
I taught elementary school in inner city Miami for three years, got a masters in Anthropology and Education in NYC, then went back to Miami to work for an education nonprofit. I'm currently working as a paralegal and the stress level is about a bazillion times less than teaching.
I’m really good at
writing, reading, trivia (except sports and music), baking, sewing, teaching people things, organizing stuff - I'm better at using Excel than most people but I want to learn more cool tricks, public speaking
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm funny and not shy (even though I am an introvert, in that I recharge by being alone or with just a few people)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: The Power Broker by Robert Caro, One Hundred Years of Solitude, everything by Junot Diaz, Gone with the Wind, Alice in Wonderland, Jane Austen, William Styron, Pat Conroy, John Irving, Oliver Sacks, Andrew Solomon, Sarah Vowell, Jon Ronson, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, presidential biographies, dumb mysteries

Movies: Annie Hall, When Harry Met Sally, Midnight Cowboy, pretty much anything with Jack Nicholson, The Philadelphia Story, Fight Club, Frieda, Five Easy Pieces, Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol

Podcasts: Radio Lab, This American Life, Serial, Limetown

Food: Mexican!
The six things I could never do without
books, converse sneakers, my parents, laughing, my cat, ice cream (in no particular order)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
If I was a high school English teacher I would use a classroom management system based on black-eyes and feathers-in-your-cap from Catch 22.

If people keep writing good books I will never catch up.

If there are as many women on OkCupid with eyepatches as there are men then there are a lot of eyepatch-wearing folks in the world. Like way more than I see when I go out.
You should message me if
You've ever contemplated reading the hipster manifesto Infinite Jest. I just finished it and I like to talk (brag) about it.

You think about things and come up with theories and want to read and learn more about the world, you're interested in things, you appreciate art, you have voted in every presidential election you've been old enough to, you make things (either for your job or your hobby), you believe that addiction is not a moral deficit of the addict, you've never said that immigrants should just go back where they came from, whether or not you were physically disciplined as a child you don't believe that physical discipline is an effective way to raise children, you think human psychology is interesting

You have ever read a book by a female writer and liked it (surprisingly few guys on here list any - is that because you don't read women, don't like them, or are trying to project manliness in your profile?).

You have an eyepatch and are offended by what I said about eyepatches.
