Books: Watership Down, Jitterbug Perfume, Rendezvous With Rama,
Half Life, The Fox Woman, Wool Omnibus and anything by David
Sedaris or H.P. Lovecraft. I'm a slow reader, but I'm always
reading something. I read a lot of science fiction. I recently
finished "The Sparrow" by Mary Doria Russell (very interesting
character-driven novel about making first contact with an alien
race through Jesuit missionaries.) Now I'm reading "Excession" by
Iain M. Banks.
Movies: Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Fifth Element, Brazil, 12
Monkeys, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Blade Runner, Girls Will
Be Girls, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Touch of Satan, La
Passion de Jeanne d'Arc.
Death Becomes Her, She-Devil, and The Witches of Eastwick are my
go-to comfort movies.
TV: The Golden Girls, Farscape, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation,
Reno: 911!, Mad Men, Babylon 5, Dr. Who, Arrested Development,
Tales from the Crypt.
Music: Classical, particularly choral music like Tallis and
Purcell. Thomas Newman is a contemporary composer who always wows
me. I also like sacred music, from Byzantine and Renaissance chant
to bluegrass gospel.
On the contemporary end, I like Scandinavian electronica like
Royksopp, The Knife, and Fever Ray.
And then the grab bag, Oingo Boingo, Dido, Missy Elliot, Sarah
McLachlan, The Mavericks, Tears for Fears, Adele, First Aid Kit,
Scissor Sisters, Pink Martini and others.
I'm really a sucker for a good voice. There is a lot of
well-composed and well-produced music that I just can't get into
because the lead singer's voice just doesn't do it for me. And on
the other end, there's some music that's maybe a little cheesy, but
I like it for the person's voice (so sometimes I listen to Enya...
Food: I'm trying not to cop out here, but I really can't pick a
favorite. I like all the food. From trailer tacos to French
cuisine, my tummy is a culinary Garden of Eden.
