I am free-thinking, open-minded, and hyphen-loving.

My Self-Summary

Me? Well here's a little bit off the top of my head.

I like having new thoughts and ideas to play with (and I'd like to find somebody who wants to play along with me). Not that every moment has to be intense and intellectual, it's also great to just relax outside or have fun being crazy. Whatever suits the mood.

I'd like to meet somebody "wicked smahhht" as they'd say in my hometown back north

I spend lots of time thinking about how people learn, partly because it's my job but also because I think it's really interesting stuff to think about. Also:

Dancing, singing along to my ipod, playing games (but not playing video games all the time, I grew out of that), playing guitar, driving to Colorado. Doing something I've never done before. Basketball and tennis and frisbee golf. Sitting on the porch watching bats fly around as the sun goes down.

I don't have 1,097 facebook friends, but I do actually know everybody that I am facebook friends with. Take whatever you will from that . . .

And I'm eternally grateful to OKCupid because I met electricmenorah here

What I’m doing with my life

I'm getting a PhD in cognitive science, which is an experimental branch of psychology. Got about 3 years to go. My research is on how people learn things, which I find endlessly fascinating (your mileage may vary).

Before that I spent a few years as a professional poker player before retiring to get a PhD.

Oh and I want to travel everywhere I haven't been yet

I’m really good at

Analytical thinking, being logical, shooting 3-pointers, listening to problems and suggesting solutions, not caring that I'm not good at something, trying new things, assessing probability, being open-minded and tolerant of new ideas, writing, getting along with animals, one-on-one conversation, kissing, learning about stuff that my friends are interested in, being silly

The first things people usually notice about me

Funny question - as if any of us really know what others notice about us. I'm not good at making myself notice-able in large group settings. I'm not a loud person.

I'm good conversation once we get going, though.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I love international cuisine of all sorts, and the spicier the better. Thai, Indian, Mexican are right at the top of the list.

"The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Milman does a good job of encapsulating my philosophical beliefs in a somewhat trite fictional package. I can't speak to the movie, as I haven't watched it. And probably won't.

I don't go to many movies; I'd usually rather be doing something or having a conversation (conversations during movies are fine though!). Memento, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Goodfellas are a few good ones. The last Harry Potter movie made my brain hurt.

There's good music to be found in every genre. I still have a soft spot for heavy metal from my angsty youth, but these days I favor latin music, jazz, music that's relaxing, music I can dance to, and non-whiny indy rock and prog when I can find it.

4) Uh, clothes?

Honestly, I'm about as non-materialistic as they come. I don't value *things* very much.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How the world works, why people think about things and behave the way that they do, NBA basketball, how people learn and how to teach them about things, economics and sociology and politics and history, whatever my friends feel like talking about.

I spend so much time thinking it's hard to break it down into categories :)

On a typical Friday night I am

Oh, anything from salsa dancing at Dante's to reading articles to having some sort of late night outdoors adventure. I'm open to pretty much anything that probably won't land me in jail.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Hard to say. I'm not a very secretive person; but I really haven't done all that much that I'm not proud of. Aside from ending that sentence with a preposition.

How's this: When I was in middle school my favorite book was, no shit, Jane Eyre. So you know I'm at least a little bit of a sucker. Apparently I was genetically doomed to suffer from a case of Bronteism; I just learned today that both my mom and dad's favorite book when they were young was also Jane Eyre. Literary genetics!
