My Self-Summary
I am an eternal student. Even when I am not taking classes, I read a lot and try to expand my understanding of the universe as much as possible. I tend to get nerdy over comics, movies, cartoons, and philosophy. At least once a year, I claim to be in the middle of an existential crisis, but I think that this might just be the natural state of things.
I moved to Austin a couple of months ago (on a whim) leaving my best friend (milton334) and my grad program behind. Since moving here, I have embraced the cyclist culture (though my skills as a cyclist are still lacking, but I have gone three weeks without changing gears, so I am definitely improving) as well as the many wonders of our excellent public transportation system and have enjoyed checking out all that this town has to offer.
I admire compassion and thoughtfulness, which is probably why I am a vegetarian and also why I try to live a balanced life (or maybe that last bit is Aristotle's doing). I also enjoy intelligent conversation, so if you enjoy a debate (though debate for debate's sake can be tiresome), I would love to hear what you've got to say!
I have quite possibly the smelliest kitten (Poncho) on the planet, but he makes up for it with drooling and manipulation.
Though I am not the best planner in the world, I love projects that involve any kind of power tools and/or carpentry skills. In fact, just the thought of a circular saw makes me swoon. This attraction to shops probably stems from my ten years in tech theatre.
What I’m doing with my life
I have visited the southernmost town in the world (Puerto Williams, Chile), so I would also like to visit the northernmost town in the world (Hammerfest, Norway). Let's make this happen.
I love hip hop and have been kicking around the idea of creating some beats of my own, but first I have to get some equipment/programs/instruction so that I can do such things.
I also enjoy collecting tips on complete sustainability so that I can work my way toward having a negative carbon footprint.
I’m really good at
organizing, though I am far from OCD.
placing a sheet of paper or a handkerchief on top of something that I need every day (e.g., my phone or keys) and then not being able to find it for hours. Maybe that's what happened to that library DVD...yes, yes it IS! It was under a poster.
moving seamlessly from philosophy/psychology jargon to profanity in a single sentence.
not turning my brain off when I should be sleeping and, in the same genus, daydreaming.
having my blood sucked by ninja mosquitoes (they were much bigger and slower in Florida).
logic, but that's unfair because I was the TA for that class. I'm keeping it on here anyway because I totally geek out about that sort of thing.
finding spiderwebs with my face.
The first things people usually notice about me
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books by Howard Cruse, David Sedaris, Soren Kierkegaard<3*, Alan Moore, Jeff Smith<3, Terry Moore<3, E.O. Wilson, Hershel Elliot<3, Plato, Miranda July<3, Paulo Freire, Walter Mignolo (or really any postcolonialism), Philip K. Dick, and David Cordingly.
Movies: Me and You and Everyone We Know, Buffalo '66, the new 3:10 to Yuma, Appaloosa, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and anything by Frederico Fellini, the Coen brothers, Mel Brooks, Wes Anderson, Woody Allen (pre-2005), Werner Herzog <3, and David Lynch <3, plus lots more.
Music: The Velvet Underground, Nina Simone, Girl Talk, Beirut, Janis Joplin, The Smiths, Junior Boys, Neutral Milk Hotel, David Bowie, Gang of Four, Elliot Smith, Mos Def, The Stooges, Hot Chip, Jens Lekman, Queen, Pixies, Daft Punk, Bob Marley, The Beach Boys, Interpol, Belle & Sebastian, Tom Waits, St. Vincent, etc.
I go through phases in which I crave certain songs or artists like addicts crave whatever drugs people are into right now. The songs that I have been craving the most recently are "Better Off Without A Wife" by Tom Waits (specifically, the version off of "Nighthawks At The Diner"...this song is definitely a personal anthem), "Get Set" by Low Deep & Kano (sooo good), "Nothing Matters When We're Dancing" and "Papa Was A Rodeo" by The Magnetic Fields, "So Easy" by Röyksopp, "Pro Nails" by Kid Sister, Neil Young<3's "One Of These Days", "Mushaboom" by Feist and also "Train Song" that she did with Ben Gibbard, "Stop Dat" and "Jezebel" by Dizzee Rascal, "Race: In" and "Atlas" by Battles, and "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" by The Pop Group.
Food: I'm always on the hunt for delicious vegetarian food. Lately, I've been eating a lot of Mexican- and Mediterranean-style foods (typically my own improvisations) as well as French toast. I am also having a beautiful love affair with a certain brand of Jewish rye bread.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
You should message me if
you know something that I don't.
You should not message me if you're looking to get married. I am not opposed to lifelong unions, just the institution of marriage (hence the Waits song being a personal anthem).
