My self-summary Propose an edit

So this is the part where I'm supposed to complain about how bad I am at describing myself, or how absurd it is to characterize some one in a few paragraphs. As cynical as I may be, I have this inkling that a self-summary is not such an insurmountable task as people make it out to be.

Who am I? You’d think for a boring guy like myself the answer would be short. But, you’d think wrong. To some I am a twenty-one-year-old caucasian male with brown eyes, brown hair, freckles, and stands around 5’9”. To others I am a son whose apparent lack of ambition is only matched by his adolescent objections to parental guidance. To one I am an excessively obsessed video-game player and all-around nerd whose big-brotherly footsteps she must follow in. To another I am a fellow pup who is fun to play with, infrequently gives long walks, but will pet and scratch until she falls asleep. To some I am the ever patient, clever, sometimes worldly, other times clueless, underachieving friend. To some I am an argumentative, dogmatic asshole. To some I am a colorblind, tone-deaf, guy who can’t dance. To some I am a well-adjusted, privileged, eager learner. To some I am (or used to be) a reliable co-worker/employee with a good work ethic. To some I am a healthy, law-abiding individual. To some I am a masshole, overly open-minded, and generally too-smart-for-his-own-good northeasterner. To some I am the smart kid who keeps his ears open, but doesn’t speak up often if at all. To some I am the guy whose outer complacency belies his inner social anxiety. To some I am an atheist leaning toward nihilist, yet naturally born Jew who has decided not to embrace his heritage and dissociate himself from his religion of birthright. To some I am the moderately attractive, quiet, shy, yet unapproachable guy.

I'm probably a lot of those things. I don't know, maybe this self-summary thing is harder than I thought.

What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit

Back in school at the University of Rochester. I have been saying recently that I'm planning to major in linguistics, but I haven't actually made the formal declaration yet.

I'm really good at Propose an edit

Paying attention. Seriously, I have the longest attention span of anyone I know. Video games. Drawing. Writing.

(Okay, maybe not 'really' good, that sounds kind of arrogant, but at least reasonably proficient.)

Also, I have just recently undergone some psych-testing mostly to make sure I don't have Asperger's Syndrome (which I don't) and as far as professional psychiatry is concerned the only thing remarkable about me is my high visual IQ (99th percentile).

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit

I'm quiet, fairly socially inept, an independent thinker, irreverent, and probably keeping a brisk pace.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit

The thing with subjective stuff is there's just so much of it out there... I pretty much know what I like when I see/hear/taste/read it. I'll attempt to go through these media and list a bunch that I enjoy, but I have no clue how much having similar interests really measures compatibility between people.

Books: I don't tend to read books that often for leisure. The last thing I've read in hard-copy was a Scientific American. The last book I read was Wikinomics. I like to read, but just usually have something else to do. Some I have liked a lot are The Life of Pi, Iron and Silk, any of the Ender's series of books by Orson Scott Card, and also anything by Bill Bryson (especially A Short History of Nearly Everything, The Mother Tongue: English and How it Got That Way, and In a Sunburned Country).

Movies: I like a LOT of them. The Bourne Identity, Gataca, Blade Runner, Memento, Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Requiem for a Dream, Equilibrium, The Big Lebowski, Airplane, Trainspotting, Harvey, The Descent, Aliens, Rear Window, Snatch (and many more)

Music: Some classic and alternative rock. Some Goa. Some vocal/instrumental trance/dance (Infected Mushroom DJ Sammy). Some electronica (Moby Hooverphonic), ambient (Delerium), trip-hop/downbeat (Gorillaz). Some disco. Some Celtic. I find there's a lot of music out there I like, but those genres (and artists) I have listed tend to have more content I like than others do. Oh, and lyrics don't bear a lot of weight when it comes to my musical tastes. In fact, some of my favorite music is either instrumental or the lyrics make no sense at all.

Food: Hrmmm, I guess I like a lot of food, but there isn't a specific dish or type of cuisine I'm particularly enamored of. I like Indian and Korean and Chinese, as well as Italian and really most food. (I'm not a big fan of cheese, except on pizza)

I guess I'll also list some TV/webcomics 'n shtuff as well: Harvey Birdman-Attourney At Law, The Oblongs, The Colbert Report, Family Guy, South Park, Weeds, Law & Order, House, Mythbusters, Homestar Runner/Strong Bad E-mails, Those Aren't Muskets!, Dr. Horrible, The Guild, Red vs. Blue, Penny Arcade

The six things I could never do without Propose an edit

1. My computer. 2. Comfortable clothes. 3. Diet Soda. 4. Weekends. 5. Humor. 6. A good, comfortable pillow (sometimes I have muscle spasms in my neck).

I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit

Ummm.... I spend a lot of time just thinking. Sometimes philosophical thoughts, sometimes political thoughts, sometimes completely pointless thoughts. I tend to think too much, and not necessarily about anything in particular. (Lately I've been thinking about the internet & society)

Oh, also, how to get involved in a relationship with a girl that is mutual on as many levels as possible. I'm having doubts this is the place to do it so surprise me :P.

On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit

Probably at my computer. That or eating out with my family or friends. Sometimes watching TV. Usually nothing special. I don't usually have much going on though, so I'm usually just relaxing.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit

I took two years off from school due to a major depressive episode. I have experienced panic attacks. I meet with a psychotherapist for one-on-one therapy once a week. I take prescription medication (for depression). I have never been suicidal. I have never had to go to the hospital.

You should message me if Propose an edit

There's no conditional requirement you must fulfill to message me. However, I guess I am more specifically interested (and will probably be more apt to respond) if you happen to be female, attractive, ~20 years old, have an esoteric sense of humor, and have your head screwed on properly and a brain to go with it. (i.e. you'd rather read Scientific American than Cosmopolitan)

I've tried very hard to be honest with my profile so I hope you'll afford me the same candor.

I guess that's it. I'll just leave you with some of my favorite quotes:

"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." -Krishnamurti

"... for the object of education is to teach us to love beauty." -Plato

"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." -Aristotle

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man." -George Bernard Shaw
