I am affectionate, dependable, and hopeful.

My Self-Summary

Hello!

I love science, especially the kind of stuff that I'm doing. I find genetics fascinating (which is good, cause that was my major) and am looking forward to an amazing career in that field (If I can find a job. Damn you, economy!).

I love mushrooms--no, not *that* kind, thank you very much--and reading. I like dancing, particularly salsa and swing, not that I go very often or am particularly good at either.

I absolutely love laughing and people who are entertaining. I am very interested in gardening and plants.

I've recently developed a true appreciation for nature's beauty. It's strange, because there was no life-altering event that brought this on...One day I just woke up and found myself breathless at the range of colors in the leaves of the trees during the fall, and at the gorgeous blue of the sky.

I have an appreciation for different cultures and for history, which is the main reason that I want to travel.

Other weird obsessions--if you will--are jellyfish and lightning. Also, fire!

If you repeatedly come to my profile, send me a message! I don't bite (usually...), I swear!

What I’m doing with my life

I'm doing science. Genetics, specifically. If I could find a way to do fungal genetics, I'd be super happy. Or, you know, cnidarian genetics, but I think I might have to go to Australia for that. Anyway, I'm currently looking for a full time job. Would like to go for a PhD eventually, but we'll see.

At this point, I'm really trying to take everything a day at a time. Life is hard enough without having to think about the future all of the time.

I’m really good at

Baking, laughing, crocheting scarves, and spouting random factoids that most people probably care nothing about. Oh, and self-deprecation.

And spilling things! Especially boiling things. On myself. Woo.

The first things people usually notice about me

My smile, I've been told. Not that it's particularly pretty or anything, but there's usually one on my face. Unless I'm in a cranky mood...Cause then people notice the pointed glares and the extra heavy sarcasm. :)

Also, that I'm short (compared to most).

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: I love Pride and Prejudice, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. The Omnivore's Dilemma is good too, but kind of hard to get through. Oryx and Crake was good, if you like dystopian novels. I really like fantasy novels...I have always thought that I should have been born with magical powers..

Movies: My newest favorite is the 1982 version of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Anthony Andrews is an amazing actor and it's a shame that he never got to be as big as his costars. When Harry Met Sally, Ever After, and Goldeneye are definitely in my top 5. Hm...Die Hard is, too. Usually, I'll watch anything except for horror. I spook easily, and I like to be able to sleep at night. Also, I'm not very well versed in movies. People are always shocked to hear that I haven't seen this movie or that, and feel the need to "educate" me.

Music: I listen to most everything. I have a lot of classic rock, hip hop, classical, and musicals. I've (relatively) recently become a fan of Negramaro and Zero Assoluto.

Food: I love food! As long as it's good, I'll like it. My recent favorites are Indian and Thai. Italian has always held a special place in my heart, though. Particularly my grandmother's Italian food. Mmm. Oh, and I make a mean hot and sour soup.

The six things I could never do without

In no particular order:
Family
Love
Friends
Laughter
Music
Plants

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The future. I know that I said that I try to take it a day at a time, but I'm not really that good at ignoring the uncertainty that is looming over my head. I need to find a full time job, because the temporary extension of my student position is just that--temporary. That's what I'm really worried about, at the moment. The economy, too.

Often, I think about learning a new language.

Sometimes, I think about what it would have been like to have grown up and lived in other times. I like to think that I'd have liked to have been alive in the early 1700s, but then I realize that women had next to no rights, and people only bathed, like, twice a year, if that often. So, maybe not so much.

On a typical Friday night I am

Reading on my couch. Watching a movie by my lonesome. Occasionally, I go out for drinks with my friends. Sometimes I go to my best friend's place, where we watch movies and play Hoopla! (I know, I'm boring. What can I say?)

You won't usually find me at a club or a party. A party'd be more likely than a club, actually...

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm horrible at thinking things up. If you want to know something, just ask. Specific questions work best.

And I'm really afraid of dragonflies. (Weird, I know. Don't ask why. I can't explain it. It's irrational.)

You should message me if

You're a kind person with a good sense of humor. If you've visited my profile a billion times and STILL haven't messaged me. If you know the significance of the direction of a claddagh ring. If you own a black '67 Chevy Impala and want to drive me around in it while we blast classic rock. If you'd like a scarf (I have TONS). Or if you'd like to get to know me better. Or if you think we'd get along. Or if you like anything you've read here. Or if you'd just like to say hi. (That's a lot of ors...)
