I am tender, introspective, and voracious.

My Self-Summary

There are two ways to look at life. Actually, that's not accurate; I suppose there are thousands of ways to look at life. But I tend to dwell on two of them. The first view is that nothing stays the same and that nothing is inherently connected, and that the only driving force in anyone's life is entropy. The second is that everything pretty much stays the same(more or less) and that everything is COMPLETELY connected, even if we don't realize it. There are many mornings when i feel certain that the first perspective is irrefutably true: I wake up, I feel the inescapable oppression of the sunlight pouring through my bedroom window, and I am struck by the fact that I am alone. And that everyone is alone. And that everything I understood seven hours ago has already changed, and that I have to learn everything again. I guess I'm not a morning person. However, that feeling always passes. In fact, it's usually completely gone before lunch. Every new minute of every new day seems to vaguely improve. And I suspect that's because the alternative view-that everything is ultimately like something else and that nothing and no one is autonomous-is probably the greater truth. The math does check out; The numbers do add up. the connections might not be hard-wired into the superstructure of the universe, but it feels like they are whenever I put money into the jukebox and everybody in the pub suddenly seems to be having the same conversation. And in that last moment before i fall asleep each night,I understand Everything. The world is one interlocked machine, throbbing and pulsing as a flawless organism. This is why I will always hate falling asleep.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm currently at HSU for two years for a BA in studio art with an emphasis in photography. After this I'm not entirely sure where I'll go or what I'll do. If the chance presents itself I'd like to work for an established photographer as an assistant or perhaps get an internship somewhere. Barring that I'll most likely pursue a master's at CCA for Art Education or perhaps do that post-grad work in Japan or Germany.

I’m really good at

photography, cooking, reading...um talking about whatever strikes your fancy. I love talking and going on tangential raves about whatever. I love laughing and making people laugh with a whole slough of bad jokes. I'm also a professional mix"tape" maker with over a decade of experience, and can make a cohesive and fun collection of songs for whatever mood you're in. Beyond this...I'm creative to a fault, people don't always understand me or what I'm doing or where I'm coming from but I don't particularly mind.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm quiet, until you get to know me than I'll chew your ear off. Well...sorta, even if I do get to know you I'm not arbitrarily going to blather on and on to you. I wear it almost as a badge of pride that I don't feel the need to fill the air with meaningless noise. I don't enjoy small-talk, which isn't to say if there's something worth discussing I'll remain mute (but I suppose that isn't small-talk at all XD), rather, I'm comfortable with silence. I feel it makes what you say that much more meaningful, and besides there are so many more ways to communicate than opening your mouth. People also seem to notice my hair and eyes when first meeting. I'm told I have pretty eyes thought I don't exactly see what people see. And the hair thing....well it changes like the weather. Mussy one day, neat the next, bedhead again after that. Depends on the time/humidity/temperament/phase of the moon I suppose.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

BOOKS: I'm currently going through The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, good fantasy that makes Tolkien seem like kid stuff just in terms of grandiosity. This is a really hard section to go over; I collect books on everything and from all times, all editions. But I especially love photographer monographs and books about painting/painters and art theory/history. Outside of that books about esoteric subjects, all sorts of fiction/non-fiction. Bill Bryson, Chuck Klosterman, Stephen King, Miranda July, Dave Eggers, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nick Hornby, Orson Scott Card to name a few. I'm also a fairly big graphic novel fan and a reader of manga. If I could have a book just magically appear out of nothing it'd be the 2nd Volume of Dave Sim's Cerebus anthology. I loves me some anthropomorphic hermaphroditic aardvark sword-swinging action :D

MOVIES: Gee...um, good ones. I love old b-movies from the 30's all the way to the 70's. I love horror movies of all decades and styles, I love being scared and having someone to be scared with. Favorite directors include Welles, Hitchcock, Kubrick, the Coen brothers, Miyazaki, but holy crap I love all sorts of movies. In fact you'd be hard-pressed to find a movie that I can't appreciate on some level for being profoundly beautiful, meaningful or incredibly bad and mock-able.

MUSIC: Again, where to begin, I love music in whatever shape it takes, and this isn't said as just a cop out cause I have no distinguishable style or opinion, it's sincere. But just skimming through iTunes here's a few names that pop up:
The Police, Johnny Cash, INXS, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Mark Ronson, The Smiths, Morrissey, Aphex Twin, Wilco, John Coltrane, Dmitri Shastokovich, Led Zeppelin, Velvet Underground, New Order, The Cure, ABBA, Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Built to Spill, Wham!, Wilson Pickett, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Del tha Funky Homosapian, XTC, The New Pornographers, Dusty Springfield, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Billy Idol, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, The Magnetic Fields, Belle and Sebastian, Billy Joel, My Morning Jacket, Blur, Prince, The Shins, Outkast, The Carpenters, Jens Lekman, Voxtrot, Hall and Oates, Radiohead, Interpol, Television, Modest Mouse, Electronic and it kind of just goes on and on like that xD

FOOD: I'm not a huge fan of mexican but beyond that everything else is pretty much free-reign. I'm a sucker for a good burger, I love bbq pork and garlic chicken with some fried rice, or a good slice of pizza (with a nice amber something or other to wash it down with). For whatever reason over the past few months beer's really grown on me to the point I don't really enjoy anything harder, wine maybe, but I hate having purple lips ~.~ I'm a fan of fish and sushi is awesome, but I'm pretty unpicky when it comes to eating, spicy is great and um...dang I'm starting to get hungry writing all this down. I think my favorite food by far though is what I can cook for myself : )

The six things I could never do without

-a camera
-a good, heavy tripod
-a good book
-diet coke
-my eyes
-clean underwear

I spend a lot of time thinking about

the end of the world, the future, we as a species, we as a nation, we as a state, the state and function of art, whatever book series has my attention at the moment, planning concerts in my head of artists I'd love to see live. Layouts for photos I haven't taken yet, ideas for paintings and performance pieces, what I'll make for dinner and how to cope with the world's general insanity around me.

On a typical Friday night I am

either in doing stuff on photoshop or doing laundry while watching a movie, or more ideally out playing pool with friends at humbrews or driving back from a day out photographing either with or without friends in tow :D

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I paint my toe-nails purple >.>
