My self-summary
I'm an expat southerner (grew up in central North Carolina) who emigrated to Massachusetts in 1988 and stayed, quite happily.

In between I lived in D.C. and Rennes, France. My only regret about New England is that, by southern standards, many people here have bad manners. :-)

I love books--I read a lot of philosophy, ethics, and politics. I especially like leftist and feminist philosophy, though I read all sorts. I can be found curled up with science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, gardening, and random nonfiction volumes when I'm reading for fun.

I've been an activist since I came out at seventeen while studying abroad. I used to be a field organizer for National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) and the regional director of development at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD). I've also worked for some soulless, predatory corporations. Thankfully I lived to tell the tale.

These days I split my time between teaching fundraising and board service to nonprofits and researching/writing about social and economic justice issues.

I enjoy gardening, movies, reading, cats, living in my cohousing community, playing wargames and roleplaying games, and spending time with friends.

My partner and I are in a polyamorous relationship. We've both been involved with others on a short-term and long-term basis. Right now I'm not seeing anyone, though I'm interested in dating.
What I’m doing with my life
Teaching nonprofits how to be effective at what they do. Researching social and economic oppression, and helping people to understand how it works. Enjoying living in a cohousing community. Trying to remember to laugh no matter how damned dark this world may seem.
I’m really good at
Languages (I was going to be a simultaneous translator), writing, political advocacy, group facilitation, simulation wargames (used to play at MIT), crisis counseling, cooking, and fundraising.
The first things people usually notice about me
My expressive face and my wicked sense of humor.

Oh, and I talk with my hands a lot. It's a southern thing...

I'm polite, though I fear that twenty years in Greater Boston may have taken the shine off of my manners.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I've always loved science fiction & fantasy literature--C.J. Cherryh, Charles Stross, J.R.R. Tolkien, Lois McMaster Bujold, Margaret Atwood, Ursula LeGuin, William Gibson, and Barbara Hambly are some of my favorite authors.

On the nonfiction side I love David Hume, Herbert Marcuse, Friedrich Nietzsche, bell hooks, Cornel West, Allan Bérubé, and a lot of others. Hey, I'm a writer--waddaya want?

I'm reading Patrick O'Brian's "Master and Commander" historical fiction series right now and thoroughly enjoying it.

I enjoy cooking and eating good food. Some of my favorite cuisines come from around the Mediterranean, though I'm quite partial to Indian, Chinese, Thai, Ethiopian, Mexican, Japanese, and others as well.

Movies... Akira Kurosawa, Pedro Almodovar, Stanley Kubrick, Deepa Mehta, Robert Altman, Michael Moore, Ridley Scott, Merchant & Ivory, lots of documentaries, many SF/Fantasy films, and legions more that I could list if I wanted to go on and on...
The six things I could never do without
1) books
2) good friends
3) tea
4) NPR (hoping they'll become less conservative...)
5) my cats
6) good food
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Politics, feminism, social and economic justice, wishing that American politics were more progressive, wondering whether our democracy--such as it is--will survive the effects of the recent 'Citizens United' Supreme Court decision, the ins and outs of polyamory, what I want to cook for my community's next common meal, designing the Japanese-inspired garden that we're planning for our yard next spring.
On a typical Friday night I am
Spending time with my partner. Often watching a movie.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Err, get me in private and I may admit many things that I won't type on the net.
I’m looking for
  • Guys who like guys
  • Ages 25–55
  • Near me
  • For new friends, long-term dating, short-term dating
You should message me if
If I seem interesting, if we share common interests, or if you'd like to have coffee sometime.

Evidently I'm an oddball. If someone writes I will respond (unless the note is churlish). Just seems the civil thing to do.

If you're just looking for sex odds are not good. Try gay.com.
