My self-summary
Song: Elephant Gun by Beirut

When I was a kid and I visited San Francisco, it was the crazy hills and the gorgeous deco bridge which made me want to live here. As an adult, I'd have to say it's that particular San Francisco flavor of bohemianism and intentional community which makes me glad I call this place home. The bridge and hills are just gravy now. Tasty, tasty gravy.

I also like to leave SF - I was camping up in the Black Rock desert over the July 4th weekend and had a blast. I also spent a month last year visiting Iceland and Norway. Puffin is rather fishy tasting but the Icelandic pickled herring on rye open-faced sandwiches are to die for. My favorite place to go is traveling.

I polled my friends for the first word to come to mind when they think of me and they came up with: generous, dashing, stylish, loyal, smart, and several choice profanities I won't replicate here. That last bit either means I have very honest friends or I have very good friends but either way, I win.

Song: The Legend of John Henry's Hammer by Johnny Cash

I fostered kittens for the first time this year. It was an awesome yet heartbreaking experience since I had to let them go in the end.

I recently started mentoring and I t's pretty humbling, I have to say. I have yet to tell them to get off my lawn but we've only just begun.

To pay the bills I make silicon do stuff.
I’m really good at
Song: Fake Palindromes by Andrew Bird

Word play; Scrabble; directions; travel; communicating with hand gestures and subverbal vocalizations; storage-unit Tetris; and being thoughtful.

I also trained myself to have total muscular control over my ears, so there's that.

Song: Stardust sung by Willie Nelson

Writers: Sherman Alexie, Michael Chabon, Terry Pratchett, Iain Banks, Neal Stephenson, David Sedaris, and Michael Pollan. I have a huge mass of books on my to-read pile next to my bed but aside from that I've limited myself to whatever can fit on the one big bookshelf in my bedroom.

Flicks: Casablanca, Brazil, The Princess Bride, Shaolin Football, The Seven Samurai, Oldboy, The Incredibles, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rejected, The Thing and The Shining.

Tubes: Breaking Bad.
Also: The Venture Brothers, Archer, Mad Men, The Wire, Firefly, Adventure Time, Community, and way too many British imports. Oh, and Louie.

Tunes: I like Andrew Bird, Beirut, They Might Be Giants, Queen, Annie Lennox, Astrud Gilberto, Fela Kuti, Bela Fleck, The Shins, The Epoxies, Herb Alpert, Gogol Bordello, The Pogues, Regina Spektor, Edith Piaf and Johnny Cash.

Eats: there's little out there which I wouldn't try. If you've never had a mangosteen I would highly recommend it.

Because it's the best. Thing. Ever.
The six things I could never do without
Song: La Mer by Charles Trenet

New experiences.
Connection.
Large bodies of water.
Comfortable shoes.
Good friends.

Also: the feeling that I am moving forward, that I'm doing things and learning.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
how to remain in the moment. Doing so is counterproductive, ironically.
