I am awesome, witty, and in my head a lot.

My Self-Summary

I'm politically liberal, I have strong opinions but don't like to argue, I want to work at non-profits my entire career, I actually enjoy volunteering, and I don't abuse my hair. I don't use run-on sentences in formal writing :)

I do the crossword in pen, but Google for answers sometimes. I like order and process. I enjoyed my thesis. I've been known to geek out over proper grammar and punctuation.

I'm passionate about animal welfare, and I need to be with someone who shares that. If you use shock collars or other means of punishment on your dogs, please message me to learn positive, effective training methods.

What I’m doing with my life

Working in outreach at a Pittsburgh non-profit. I also volunteer at several organizations, including Planned Parenthood and the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force.

I have a Bachelor's of Social Work with a focus in advocacy. I'm considering grad school next year for my Master's, possibly with a dual degree in Social Work (Policy Practice or Community Organizing) and Public Health.

I’m really good at

Memorizing anything that will fit on a 3x5 index card. Dealing with pissed off people at work. Canvassing. Cooking (following the recipe is overrated). Spelling. Using post-it notes and binder dividers, with increasing efficiency. Bargain hunting/strategic use of coupons. Educating clients at work, hopefully without sounding preachy. Hovering THISCLOSE to nosebleed stress for days at a time (I get nosebleeds when I reach my absolute breaking point. Election Day 2004? Three nosebleeds.) Writing long papers.

The first things people usually notice about me

Despite my best efforts, I usually have dog hair on me.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Biographies and autobiographies. Short stories. Fiction. James Thurber (The Night the Bed Fell on Father!). Joyce Carol Oates. Lucky. The Glass Castle. I really want to read American Lion, a biography of Andrew Jackson. He was a nutball. I'm currently reading a biography of Emily Dickinson. But it was written by a relative, a neice or something, so obviously it can't be completely objective.

TV: Chelsea Lately. The Daily Show. The Office. It's Me or the Dog. Law & Order. Dollhouse. The Good Wife. Life After People is awesome, but would be so much easier to watch if they didn't use the same narrator for every. single. History Channel. show.

Movies: Jack the Bear. Juno. The original Planet of the Apes movies. Drumline. Saved! Wristcutters. I Know Who Killed Me. X-Men movies, but the third one kind of sucks. Documentaries. (I think it sounds wrong to say that Born Into Brothels is my "favorite" documentary.) I like vampire mythology, but Twilight was written by someone with the mind of a middle-schooler.

Music: The Beatles. Hanson. Tegan & Sara. The Black-Eyed Peas. Jenny Lewis. Tinted Windows. And lots of other stuff. As I write this, I'm listening to what was supposed to be an old cd of Ghost of the Robot downloads, and I really don't remember putting The Sex Pistols and The Kinks on here, so who knows how that happened...

Food: Couscous. Hummus. Sweet potatoes. Rice crackers. Very Cherry Jelly Belly Jelly Beans. Lentil soup. Pico de Gallo. Burritos. Sushi. Mint chocolate chip ice cream (the green kind only!)

The six things I could never do without

Pets
Good food
Friends
Knowing I was making a difference.
A dishwasher (or a roommate who likes to do dishes)
The "How to do anything better" section of Glamour

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Ways to save money. It's one of the better obsessions a person could have.

If the people who make "Watermelon" lipgloss have ever actually SEEN a watermelon.

On a typical Friday night I am

Out with my friends, at a movie or dinner or whatever's happening. At City Theatre. Volunteering.

Last Friday night I fell asleep on the couch early, after a long day of vet appointments.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm not one of those people who eats terrible food just to be polite. Now, extrapolate that to other situations.

You should message me if

You're a dog person.
You know what an NGO is without Google.
You have something interesting to say :)
