My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I just moved to Charlottesville from New York City. I really loved living in New York, but I'm learning to love it here too. I just have to adjust to driving again for the first time in ten years. Apologies in advance to the mailboxes of Charlottesville.

I like cooking (I make my own bread!). I like eating (I eat my own bread!). I like social justice and anti-racist websites (and anti-racism in general). I like hiking (Can anyone recommend some good day hikes in the area?). I like Nerd culture and nerds. Not a big fan of pina coladas, indifferent to getting caught in the rain.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I just started PhD program in English. Before that I was a geriatric social worker. I liked working with old people because we have similar tastes in movies, music, and room temperature. Just kidding. Kind of. I'm not sure if academia or social work is my calling, but I'm taking a break from one to work on the other. It's kind of cool to read novels for a living.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Quoting old movies, hitting a high C, and walking long distances in the city.

Also, the art of losing, but it isn't hard to master.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Glasses.

Okay, the important stuff.

Jane Austen, forever and always; the Brontes, Eliot, 19th Century British women writers are my jam. Toni Morrison and Virginia Woolf are always good, Evelyn Waugh, John Fowles, Jennifer Egan, Alison Bechdel, Loorie Moore, EM Forster, JK Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Edith Wharton, Anthony Trollope, Louise Erdrich, Sherman Alexie, Ishiguro. I also really enjoy graphic novels, but I haven't read many of them and am looking for recommendations.

I love old movies! some favorites include: Bring Up Baby, Anything Marx Brothers, Charade, North by Northwest. I'm a huge Robert Altman fan, and I love Almodovar as well. I used to be much more into movies, but then I got netflix, my attention span shortened, and now I just mainline entire television series like everyone else.

I'm in deep mourning that the NBC Thursday night line up is coming to an end. I may be Liz Lemon, with a dash of Leslie Knope thrown in. So, natch: 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Community are all favorites. I recently started mooching my parent's HBO Go subscription and am catching up on all of the series that I missed in the early 2000s, especially Six Feet Under and the Wire (particularly poignant to a Baltimore native like myself). And not gonna lie, I really like Girls, although I appreciate how someone could really hate it. Also, Futurama, Buffy and all things Joss Whedon (enjoyed the Agents of Shield pilot!), Mad Men, Sports Night, Dr. Who, Downton Abby (I am a total sucker for brits and costume drama), Slings and Arrows.

Podcasts shape my week--I used to spend a lot of time on the subway, and they have since become a habit. My favorites are: This American Life, On the Media, The Moth, Savage Love (don't always agree with what he says, but it's entertaining), Selected Shorts, Radiolab, New Yorker Fiction, NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour, and Planet Money. Every other sentence out of my mouth begins with "I heard this thing on NPR..."

When it comes to music I'm a total dork (because up til now you were thinking, she's so suave and interested in totally normal things). I like show tunes. Lots and lots of show tunes--especially Sondheim. I also like Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco, Dar Williams, Amanda Palmer, Joan Baez, Ella Fitzgerald. When it comes to music I'm very lyric oriented, so if you have any recommendations with great lyrics I'd be interested in expanding my horizons.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
NPR, Mansfield Park, caffeine, a watch, comfy shoes, and parenthesis.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How to rescue myself from hypothetical disasters.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
atypical.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I didn't learn how to ride a bike until I was 26. Also, I'm scared of Zombies. They are never funny; they are always scary.

You are passionate about something--a cause, a book, a band, proper word usage, non-newtonian physics. Even if it's different from what I'm interested in, I appreciate it when people have things they can geek out about.
