My self-summary
This seems very silly/feels very awkward. I am supposed to "summarize" myself in a little text box. Shall I be witty? Charming? Enticing? Sexy?

How about just being me, and letting the details evolve if you care to get to know me. I could list a bunch of adjectives that, while I'm new to this, I imagine become fairly cookie cutter and meaningless: I'm honest, shy until you get to know me, sweet and affectionate, driven, professional, blah, blah, blah...but that means nothing until you judge for yourself.

I will say that I recently received the best compliment I have ever heard: "You are the most self-aware person I know." The fact that this is more complimentary to me than almost any other cheesy thing someone could say, is fairly telling I think.
What I’m doing with my life
I teach. I write. I read. I parent. I mentor. I laugh. I make mistakes. I learn from them.
I’m really good at
Cliche as it sounds, making people laugh. I was only recently made aware that people think I am really funny; I'm a bit concerned that they are laughing at, rather than with me, but anything that brings a little light to peoples lives is ok by me.

I'm also pretty adept at thinking, analyzing, which unfortunately turns sometimes to over-thinking, over-analyzing, but I suppose that is slightly better than marching through life blindly.
The first things people usually notice about me
Um...my hair is crazy and curly and long and I rarely straighten it so that's pretty noticeable. Perhaps my smirky smile that suggests shyness and innocence to the untrained eye, but something a little more devious for those willing to dig deeper : )
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: I devour them. I could fill pages and pages with my favorite titles--instead I will just list what I'm reading currently, the genres I like, and maybe my top five books of all time...
Currently reading: Brief Interviews with Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace, I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb

I tend to favor realistic fiction over fantasy/sci-fi but I have recently taking a liking to some dystopian literature. I also enjoy non-fiction, especially the sort that begs me to change my perspective on something important, or challenges rigid ideals.

Top books: The Handmaid's Tale, Native Son, Grapes of Wrath, The Power of One, and Invisible Man.

Movies: Love 'em. Things that make me laugh, things that make me think, things that make me make fun of myself for being so darn cheesy.

Shows: I don't watch much T.V. I am enjoying Orange is the New Black and House of Cards on Netflix currently.

Music: Yes. ( Not the band Yes, just yes, give me music of all genres).
The six things I could never do without
My son, books, conversation, laughter, lovin', learnin'
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Everything...all I do is think! But at this very second, I am thinking about how to convince my students that writing is fun, why more men don't think sitting around in our undies and watching football and drinking brewski is a fun date idea, and why Tallahassee is so far away.
On a typical Friday night I am
Depends on whether or not I received a slurry of essays that week: either grading, or finding friends to have a beer and chat with.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm not particularly private. If you are worth telling anything to, I will likely tell you anything.
You should message me if
You want to know more than what one can fill out in a series of little boxes.
