My self-summary
My ideas, words and oblique humor are what are most likely to draw you to me. I relish in the subtle, the ironic, the insightful and I love to share and learn from others. I am passionate about discovering truth wherever it can be found. I can be enthusiastic in some of my opinions but would not take pride in being an expert on only one side of an issue. Building bridges is more important to me than planting flags.

What brings me the most joy are those experiences which defy language: the wonder at natural landscape, the taste of guiding human learning. I am in awe of the capability of the human mind to transcend to new levels of comprehension.

I treasure honesty and kindness in myself and others. I see people as neither good nor bad, but at differing stages of self-centeredness. Maturity is the capacity to be wise while playing with childlike enthusiasm. Smart is sexy.

I find sound delicious. I love richly developed music of most any style possessing depth. I love how people talk - every subtle variation in their speech and accent. I can forget a person's name and face, but remember their voice for a lifetime.

The greatest pleasure for me in my relationship with a woman is being able to leave her smiling inside and out. I am less about charisma, charm or entertainment than about being a genuine listener, not merely to what you say but to what you mean. I believe that communication is 90% listening and 10% talking. I prefer to use my words sparingly and would rather choose one bullseye than dilute a conversation with static. It is the small things, in the right time and place that count the most.

I savor European culture. When I travel as tourist, I am not in a hurry. I prefer to stroll around a while, interact with locals and become acquainted with the world through their eyes and preferably in their language. The art and architecture of the wonders are magnificent, but to me, more so is the art and architecture of the people in their own right.

I lived for 3 years in Europe when I was young, including a span at an international school. I was deeply affected by the exposure to many word views and to this day feel myself a member of the world community. Although I am still American, I am not exactly Americentric.

I care a lot for kids and I think they know it. I tried high school teaching for a few years, initially in urban Boston. Having grown up on the SF peninsula, that pretty much blew my mind. I really loved being involved with the learning process and working with young adults, though the stimulation level of the classroom taxed me. I was much more effective with small groups. I still retain the passion for helping people learn. People routinely tell me I have a talent for making complicated things accessible. Witnessing a mind illuminated with understanding brings me abiding satisfaction.

My parents were nuclear physicists. I am still recovering from this.

Many of my favorite forms of play have technical flavor: sailing, flying, SCUBA, skiing. With the right company, a simple walk is a pleasure. Probably the most romantic physical act for me is holding hands. I enjoy being anywhere there is a view of nature. I like being out doors or at the beach, but am not really a lie in the sun sort. I would rather be in the water or riding on top of it.

If I had a pet, it would probably be a yellow lab. Labradoodles, also cool.

I am financially conservative and self sufficient. I don't seek happiness through having more things. I strive to make the most of what I do have.

I find humor in even the dark points of life.
