My self-summary
I've been in New York City for over 4 years now. Before living here, I've lived in Boston, Iowa, and Florida. My family currently lives in Tennessee, which is where I went to college and lived throughout most of my twenties. I've got a little bit of a southern sensibility, mostly with respect to my love of mountains and old-time/bluegrass music. But I should add that I wouldn't describe my politics as southern at all. Im a Bernie Sanders guy.

I suppose Im a mixed bag of romantic/realist/idealist/pragmatist/spiritualist/secularist/southern yankee if that makes any sense. I think it has to do with the fact that I grew up in Florida, where everyone is from somewhere else, and where people only commit to living there for half the year.

I've had several runs on OKCupid, and I've actually made a couple truly meaningful connections off here since I've lived in NYC. As Im sure we can all relate to, its tough to figure out the science of how to use this site effectively and make the kind of connection we want to make, but I figured I'd give this another go. Hoping for a bit of luck and serendipity.
What I’m doing with my life
I moved to NYC in August 2011 to begin my PhD in theology (ask me about that, because I get a lot of funny assumptions, and its probably not what you think). I've been working on that ever since. I am passionate about my studies and consider myself very lucky to be working with some great scholars in my field.
I’m really good at
Well I spend a lot of my time reading and writing for school, so I hope Im good at that. I play the guitar, and consider myself an amateur, but I might get up at an open mike from time to time, and I like to play in some jams around the city. I like to think I have good taste in music, and I spend a good bit of my free time trying to hunt down good live music options.

To be quite frank, music has become a really big part of my life in NYC (it threatens to take over my school life sometimes, if I let it). I've met a truly fantastic community of musicians and music-lovers here, and I have my ear to the ground for good shows, jams, sessions, etc. on a weekly basis, and I like to go out pretty often for that.
The first things people usually notice about me
That I tend to space out a lot.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Music: let it just suffice to say that I love going to live music shows of all kinds, and I am an avid music fan....I tend to favor the bluegrass/folk/americana stuff the most, but I also love soul and I really enjoy going out for jazz. Some favorites include Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Norman Blake, Hank Williams, Flatt and Scruggs, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Martin Simpson, Richard Thompson, June Tabor, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, John Hartford, Doc Watson, The Louvin Brothers, Woody Guthrie, Paul Simon, Sam Cooke, Kate Wolf, Ricky Nelson, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, The Byrds, The Punch Brothers, Anais Mitchell, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Delmore Brothers, The Blue Sky Boys, Iris Dement, The Everly Brothers, and more stuff like that.

Movies and TV: Also a fan of these. But aren't we all pretty much at this point, in the age of Netflix?

Food: sushi, italian, mexican are probably my top three.
The six things I could never do without
Music, a good beverage, peanut butter, chocolate, friendship, oxygen.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The meaning of life; why Lois Lane can't recognize Superman with his glasses on.
On a typical Friday night I am
Once again, music is kind of my thing to go out for. But Im usually up for all kinds of adventures. After all, its NYC.
