I am kind of dorky, quietly iconoclastic, and subtly witty..
My Self-Summary
I'm a big dork. All my favorite people are big dorks. I don't trust
people who aren't nerdily passionate about something. I'm not
socially awkward or anything. I have plenty of friends. When it
comes down to it though, I like reading and taking it easy.
I'm fun to drink with, I'm a good bullshitter. I love getting into
rambling debates. Sometimes I play the devil's advocate for no
reason. I can't dance. Seriously.
I get along with most people, and I'm interested in lots of things.
I'm comfortable in most crowds. I believe that people should
express themselves through ideas more than appearances.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm teaching English in Bangkok and having a good time. I wish I
had more money, but so does everyone.
I'm starting to carve out a niche here and want to meet new people.
I’m really good at
Picking out memes before they explode. Pushing things over. Going
with the flow. Procrastinating. Eating. (And cooking, but not so
much in Thailand.)
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
I read a lot. I usually will read 2-3 non fiction books in a row,
then treat myself with cheesy sci fi. I probably don't read enough
contemporary fiction. I like Douglas Coupland and Tom Robbins. I
liked Kurt Vonnegut. (I guess I still do.) I like Neal Stephensen.
I'm not huge into classics, though I try to read something out of
the canon every few months. I like most of George Orwell's stuff. I
like most of Hemmingway's stuff. I like Cormac McCarthy. I can
safely say that I don't like Don Delilo.
I like audio books. I still read comic books, I guess people call
them graphic novels.
I like tons of movies. I might be the only person in the world that
didn't like Boondock Saints, be forewarned.
I'm not huge on romantic comedies. I think Love Actually and High
Fidelity were pretty good.
I like cheesy action movies in the martial arts vein, not a huge
fan of Michael Bay-type action movies.
I think Quentin Tarrantino is consistently good. The Cohen brothers
always do a good job. I like Wes Andersen, but maybe not as much as
I'm supposed to. I thought that No Country for Old Men was great.
Children of Men was pretty top notch.
The six things I could never do without
The internet, honestly. Alone time. Friends. Good food and good
beer. I miss having a bicycle. I miss cold weather and being able
to walk in the woods.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I studied anthropology and history at university. I spend a lot of
time reading books that touch on either.
I spend too much time thinking about food, both eating and
producing it. (Lot's of Michael Pollan stuff.)
I think a lot about the future, the economy, the environment and
oil.
I'm big on reading about intellectual history and the history of
science. I'm a die hard skeptic and am kind of uneasy about
religious fundamentalism.
I like looking at society through the principles of behaviorism,
economics and natural selection. I'm not a social Darwinist, but I
think Dawkins draws some interesting parallels between biological
and cultural evolution.
On a typical Friday night I am
Getting ready to work on Saturday morning. I guess Thursdays are my
big night, but I haven't nailed down a routine yet.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
Do people every answer this? I wish I was taller.
You should message me if
You want to. I'm not a big romantic, but I like meeting new people.
