Which would you rather have more of?

Which would you rather have more of?
  • Imagination
  • Knowledge

Aack! I don't know! If I had more imagination, I could come up with creative solutions to things, and prove exciting theorems. But if I had more knowledge, I could sort it out and prove other exciting theorems! And if I had more knowledge, it would be easy to do homework and pass tests. But if I had more imagination, it might actually be more enjoyable to do those things because I would be coming up with more interesting answers. I just don't know!

(I posted this mainly just to try out the journal thing. My post wasn't especially interesting.)

An image of Omnifarious Your post reminds me of Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse from Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephensen in which he constructs a happiness function for himself that involves proving theorems and one other factor. He is quite disturbed to discover a third factor entering the equation towards the middle of the book.

Default user image So, did you ever answer the question? I'm pretty sure I skipped that one for a lot of the reasons that you mentioned. It's just too hard to tell and my opinion would certainly change from situation to situation.

An image of YahooToYouToo Actually I was more interested in finding out what the difference is between "Trekkies" and "Trekkers".

You mean, you don't know either?!

An image of cave_person I like to think of such questions as 3d surfaces. Some third quality--"usefulness" say--make it a function of the two options... Then the question becomes -- Which component of the gradient is larger? At least for "small changes" in the current "region".

For small changes..I think I would go with imagination. A little bit more knowledge seems rather static compared to a little bit more imagination. A little bit of more imagination likely has a compounding effect on "usefulness".

For large and infinite changes I think I would go with knowledge. Knowing everything would be pretty interesting. But infinite imagination? What is that? -Poorly defined. In many ways imagination is always infinite...you can make up anything you want without impedance. So the question could be moot.

An image of pseudonym82 Yeah, well, I'm just commenting in your journal to bring up my Profile Completion level. I'm going to see if I can bring it above 90% today without writing a damn test. If I do write a test, I'll probably call it the How Much Do You Hate OkCupid Tests test.
