My self-summary
On the one hand I love to get together with friends, hanging out at a dinner party, staying up all night (sometimes even on a school night) chatting about nothing in particular, embarking on road trips to New York City and other points south. I like throwing big parties with live music performed by me and my musician friends. I am interested in why and how. I'm a fan of loud rock 'n' roll. I literally play with fire.

On the other hand, I don't mind getting away from it all. I like to go camping, canoeing, bicycling, and hiking. I enjoy a good book now and again, though I watch some television. I like modern jazz and chilling out with an acoustic guitar.

I am a fixer: I like to fix things that break. I will commonly be found tightening loose screws, oiling chains and door hinges that squeak, aligning the coffee pot so it doesn't dribble, etc. I also like to solve peoples' problems.

I am fascinated by religions and religious beliefs, having tried on a few like one might try on dress-up clothes. Although I'm not religious at all I can still respect your beliefs and faith, even if it's not my own style; I don't judge people by how they dress.

I am a musician. I play, or try to play, just about anything I can get my hands on. So far the only instrument which has bested me, where I cannot make anything other than irritating squeals, is the oboe. (Damn you, uncapped double reed!) Once upon a time I used to write and record trite songs. Maybe someday I will again. For now, I spend some Sunday afternoons in my makeshift studio playing rock 'n' roll with whomever shows up.

I roll with a large crowd of geeks, freaks, and artists of all stripes. I dabble in circus arts like juggling, fire eating, and fire breathing. I have tried and failed to accomplish riding a unicycle. (Oh, the hilarity!) To say my crowd can be exciting at times is an understatement. I am very close to my friends and will generally do anything for them, as they saved me from a hum-drum life of normalcy. I spend a lot of time these days dancing and getting up to shenanigans with the Burning Man crowd.

I am witty, musical, and spontaneous.

What I’m doing with my life
I play music any chance I get. I try not to let work get in the way of my social life. Lately I've tried community theatre and interactive art and I've decided I like it and want to do more.

Other interesting things I've done:
* I sailed down the Charles River in an inflatable bouncy castle
* I took part in Boston's No-Pants Subway Ride in January
* I've been to Burning Man, and a plan to go again
* I'm a space pilot in an intergalactic organization known as SCUL
* I'm the proprieter of a Wandering Cricket Night Market truck

I’m really good at
the music stuff: playing guitar, electric bass, and drums, though not all at the same time. I can muddle along on piano and mandolin, and I can sing pretty well too. I'm good at computer stuff in general -- after all, it's how I make my living. I'm great at fixing all kinds of things. My friends seem to think I'm an awesome friend, which is fair enough because I'll generally go way out of my way for my friends.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I like reading science fiction short stories, especially those of Philip K. Dick. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi movies, too; every year on President's Day I endure a 24-hour sci-fi movie marathon. (They call it a 'film festival' now to make it sound up-class but I'm not buying any of that.) I'm a musical omnivore, and I'll listen and play just about any style. My favorites range from old blues and Grateful Dead stuff all the way through to some Nine Inch Nails and a whole bunch of electronica. I will eat pretty much anything that doesn't move fast enough to get away. I love to cook and I'll often be found trying "difficult" recipes like Ckicken Kiev or Beef Wellington. I'm a huge fan of sushi and I love to throw sushi-making parties.

Since it's all the rage to put up lists of favorite artists and programs, here they are:
Music: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Beatles, Grateful Dead, Crystal Method, Steely Dan, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Beats Antique, Psylab, Umphrey's McGee
TV: currently watching Breaking Bad, Dexter, True Blood, The Walking Dead
These are certainly not exhaustive!

The six things I could never do without
A guitar (okay, I'd settle for a piano)
Someone to hug
A sharp 8-inch chef's knife
Fire
The Internet, 'cause I'm a techno-junkie
All my amazing friends

I spend a lot of time thinking about
community, art, and the interaction of the two. I'm not above navel-gazing regarding my rag-tag band of close friends, and how we collectively got to where we are, and where we're going, and just how we think we're going to get there.

On a typical Friday night I am
out at some party, or planning same. I get involved with organizing things and making things happen, so I tend to be at a lot of meetings. Of course this means I tend to know where all the good parties are!
