My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Just to give you a small taste of my flavor, here are a few of my LIKES (in no particular order): NPR/PBS, Dar Williams, sleep, cycling, organization, Thai food, compassion, public transportation, being quick to forgive and to ask forgiveness, science fiction, Sebastiao Salgado, "This American Life," campaign finance reform, Value Village, feminism, J. S. Bach, and "The Daily Show."

And here are a few DISLIKES: the death penalty, using cell phones while driving, celery, cockiness, flakiness, SUVs, baseball and football, provincial worldviews, gas-powered leaf-blowers, cold jeans on cold mornings, foreign policy based on maintaining America's standard of living, "The Secret" and the "law" of attraction, and Creationism.

I'm looking for a friendship hopefully leading to a long-term relationship with someone who's honest and communicative, compassionate, affectionate, liberal, smart, informed, physically active, and vegan. This last item is very important to me. I could only share my life with someone whose compassion for animals exceeded her taste for them.

I have the heart of a thrill-seeker but the head of an actuary. This keeps me out of trouble (e.g., no STDs) but also leaves me frustrated a lot of the time.

A note about travel: I like to take foreign trips as much as the next person. Indeed, I was born overseas, so you might say I got the travel bug as a congenital parasite. But I’ve also become aware over the last few years of the disproportionate damage that traveling by jet does to the environment, especially in terms of global warming. Although I do still take planes, I try to take fewer trips and stay for longer periods. So I would much prefer one monthlong trip overseas to several spontaneous weekend trips to Hawaii, Mexico, or the Caribbean.

It amazes me sometimes that given all the things that can keep people apart, two people ever find their way to each other. My feelings on the subject are pretty well summed up in the following lyrics (by Neil Peart) from a Rush song:

I don't believe in destiny
Or the guiding hand of fate
I don't believe in forever
Or in love as a mystical state
I don't believe in the stars or the planets
Or angels watching from above
But I believe there's a ghost of a chance we can find someone to love
And make it last
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
You tell me.

Books: Brothers K, The River Why; mostly nonfiction history and politics, like A Problem from Hell.

Movies: Religulous, Star Wars (original trilogy), The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Night on Earth, White Nights, Wings of Desire, The Killing Fields, Holy Grail.

TV Shows: Rome, John Adams, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Nova, Frontline, Prime Suspect, thirtysomething, Arrested Development, Foyle's War, FlashForward, True Blood, Carnivale, Newsroom, Sherlock, Downton Abbey (of course); I like both In Treatment and Californication, but if I had to assign percentages, I'd say I'm 95% Paul Weston and only 5% Hank Moody.

Music: Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, David Wilcox, Dar Williams, Sarah McLachlan, J.S. Bach, Sting, Billy Joel, Alison Krauss, ELO, Kansas, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Nellie McKay, Suzanne Vega, Yes, Antonio Vivaldi.

Despite being an atheist, I have a huge weak spot for Christmas music.

I'm happy to receive friendly hellos, of course, and I'm friends with all sorts of people, but as I've written above, I only date vegans or those seriously interested in that lifestyle.
