down-to-earth, intellectual, and quirky
My self-summary Propose an edit
I'm relatively new to Baltimore, and I'm looking forward to
meeting people and exploring the area further! I was raised in New
England by New Yorkers (my family is Jewish but not religious), and
I spent a good chunk of my post-college years enjoying the mighty
redwoods, eerily perfect weather, and offbeat culture of the San
Francisco Bay area.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
I moved back east to take a job as a Shakespeare professor. I've been
teaching English literature classes for a while now,
and it's always exciting...sometimes it's like the excitement of
seeing a child's face as you give them a beautiful new toy, and
sometimes it's more like the excitement of trying to sell broccoli
to a tank full of sharks, but I find it pretty rewarding either
way. My current research involves the appeal of evil in English
Renaissance
literature.
I also love to sing,
whether it's performing Byzantine chants or laying down a funky
disco bass line, and I've been in a variety of choruses and a cappella groups (plus
occasional bouts of Gilbert and Sullivan). More
recently, I've been trying to get into voiceovers.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Well, I'd like to think I'm good at the aforementioned academic and
musical stuff. In terms of my relationships with other people, I
think I'm good at listening, communicating, and keeping things in
perspective.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
I have a fairly deep voice, which can suggest Barry White, NPR, or
Darth Vader, depending on my mood.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Books: I read a lot. Of the literature I teach, my favorites are
Shakespeare, Paradise Lost, and John Donne. I read Lord
of the Rings many times growing up, and I still enjoy science
fiction/fantasy for relaxing reading. Recently finished a
series by China Mieville which I really enjoyed. I'm pretty
interested in reading about a variety of political, scientific, and
cultural topics, but I tend to do most of that on the
internet.
Movies: I tend to prefer intelligent comedies. My favorites are the
ones that still make me laugh after many
years...Ghostbusters, the Pink Panther movies, The
Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The
best recent movie I've seen is Dark Knight.
Music: Indigo Girls, Sara McLachlan, U2, Jonathan Coulton, Sting,
Genesis, Barenaked Ladies, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, Rush, They
Might Be Giants, Annie Lennox, Seal. I like music with good vocal
harmonies (probably all that time in a cappella groups...)
Food: Food's always been important to me, but I'm more about
authentic ethnic food
and not as into ultra-fancy gourmet food or standard American food
(unless you count pizza!) I've always liked dim sum, and since
living in CA, Thai is one of my favorites, but anywhere in Asia or
near the Mediterranean is fine by me, as is Ethiopian, Mexican,
etc. etc.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
Family, friends, food, books, music, and...I might have to say
internet.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
I'm a bit of an intellectual omnivore. I like thinking and learning
about lots of different subjects, and I tend to get along with
people who also have a variety of intellectual interests and like
to learn new things.
You should message me if Propose an edit
I'm mostly on here to meet potential romantic partners who are open
to a long-term relationship, but I'd be interested in making
friends in the Baltimore/DC area as well.
