My self-summary Propose an edit

So, I like science. And writing, and reading. I'm also a fan of good conversation, properly-used semicolons, yoga, poetry, and music. I'm reasonably good at writing (fiction and non), listening (if that counts as a skill), math, and acquiring random facts. I'm not so good with spatial skills... but we can't all be perfect, I suppose.

I'm vegetarian, relatively eco-conscious, and a bit of a socialist, so if any of those aren't okay with you... you'd best back away slowly. :)

What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit

I'm a graduate student, which means I do a lot of research, a little teaching, and some occasional coursework. It's actually fantastic.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit

I almost wish I could say something generic like "my eyes", but a surprising number of people meet me and immediately mention that I have nice skin. No, really, they do. It's vaguely Silence-of-the-Lambs-ish. Try not to join their ranks.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit

Books: The Time Traveller's Wife, Watership Down, Cat's Eye, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Ender's Game, The Chrysalids... I could go on all day.

Movies: RENT!, Philadelphia, The Shawshank Redemption...

Music: Los Campesinos! (Seriously; they're awesome. Look them up. I'll wait. It's more fun than surfing a dating site anyway, I promise.)... Um, also Anna Nalick, K.T. Tunstall, Jewel, Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco (though I'm suitably ashamed), Green Day, Blink 182....

Food: Cheese, and anything containing cheese. Mmm.

The six things I could never do without Propose an edit

1) My family. It's cheesy and ridiculous, but unconditional love and support has its merits.

2) Language. A world without words is not a world that I would be happy in.

3) Relatedly, books and stories. The world would be a sad place without them.

4) Hugs. When I was a kid I used to rank the quality of a day based on how many hugs I'd gotten, and I can't say I've completely grown out of that.

5) Coffee. Graduate school has transformed coffee from a beverage into a necessity.

6) Good conversation-- especially with interesting, passionate people who teach me things.

On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit

Either out with friends, or home watching "What Not to Wear". Fortunately, I prefer the former.
