My field is human-computer interaction, but basically I just hang out with robots all day. I'm trying to teach them how to talk and interact with humans. This is a skill that my idiot robots really suck at. They blend right in at the computer science department holiday parties.
The best and most unexpected part of my life over the past 5 years of grad school is the amount of traveling I've gotten to do. Some sucker (my advisor) keeps thinking it's a great idea to send me to conferences around the world, places like Japan, Australia, Scotland, Korea, and Germany. For the first 6 months of 2014, I was on a fellowship in Paris. This was an amazing experience, during which I did a fair amount of research work (French robots are also dumb), drank a lot of cheap wine, and learned very little French.
