What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm in my 5th (and hopefully very close to last) year of grad school at UW, studying human-computer interaction. Basically I hang out with robots all day. I'm trying to teach them how to talk and interact with humans. This is a skill that my idiot robots really suck at. They blend right in at our computer science department holiday parties though.

The best and most unexpected part of my life over the past 5 years is the amount of traveling I've gotten to do. Some sucker (my advisor) keeps thinking it's a great idea to send me to conferences around the world, places like Japan, Australia, Scotland, and Germany. Also Canada. For the first 6 months of 2014, I was on a fellowship in Paris. This was an amazing experience, during which I did a fair amount of research work (French robots are also dumb), drank a lot of cheap wine, and learned very little French.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Academia. I'm not so good at this "real life" thing that some people claim to have and excel at. But I'm trying.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Books: Weird speculative fiction. Haruki Murakami, Ursula K. LeGuin, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, Iain M. Banks, Isaac Asimov, etc.

Movies: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Memento, The Prestige, American Psycho, Black Swan, Troll 2, The Room (!!!)...

Shows: Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, The Walking Dead, Louie, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Twin Peaks, Lost, Childrens Hospital, Rocko's Modern Life...

Music: In general, as long as it isn't country, I'm pretty open to a lot of genres and styles. I love going to concerts, shows, raves, clubs, festivals, pow wows, dance parties in creepy basements, you name it. Let's go!

Food: I love all foods, except (and this is a big exception) anything pickled. Pickled eggs, pickled rice, pickled turnips, pickled pickles. Disgusting. I truly believe that pickles are cucumbers soaked in evil. However! If you are a person that loves pickles, you will love [having meals with] me. Anytime I get a meal and there is an unwanted pickle on my plate, BOOM, that pickle is all yours. I may throw it at you, so stay alert.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
(1) coffee
(2) google
(3) something to read
(4) someone to talk to about that crazy thing I just read
(5) my passport
(6) more coffee

Sometimes (often (always)) when I'm driving alone, I like to play my music painfully loud and sing along at the top of my lungs.
