nonstop rain == finish rebuilding that bicycle

Feb 15, 2009

So now that I'm kept from doing much outside, I'll probably finish rebuilding my road bike. Its a metallic tan/gold Univega Gran Primo. I've had this [[bicycle]] for years, and for much of that time it's languished in the basement with no cranks attached. Last time I gave any attention to it I was going to replace the bottom bracket bearings. I got so far as to remove the cranks. :)

But about a few months ago I attended the SF Bike Expo & Swap, got some parts (cranks & handlebars), and decided to make it functional again & convert it to a single speed ([[fixie]]). It's taken me these few months to figure out what & gather the parts necessary (as well as finding a more modern GXP crank!). I built a new rear wheel from a Formula fixed gear hub (with sealed bearings), an Alex DA28 rim, and black DT Comp spokes with red [[nipples]]. I love building wheels, it's very meditative and a little bit challenging.

Today, I finally mounted a tube & tire on the wheel, then mounted it on the bike. Hmm, the freehub I bought for it isn't meshing with the chain at all! :( I'm also mounting the brake levers & bar tape I bought. It'll finally be a ridable bike again, yay!
