I am curious, genuine, and quirky.

My Self-Summary

I'm passionate about reading, writing, my friends and family, and exploring. I have a broad range of interests, and I like meeting people who can introduce me to new ideas. I cook as much as my work/social schedule allows. I like to go out for a beer or go dancing, but I also enjoy quiet nights in. I love my friends, but I definitely need time alone to recharge -- which makes me an introvert, I guess.

There's more, of course. I'm happy to tell you all about it if you want to know.

What I’m doing with my life

In general, trying to be a force for good, not evil. Work-wise, I copyedit books on economic justice at a nonprofit. I want to keep doing both of those things – working on books and supporting economic justice – but I'm not sure exactly what form that will take. Other than that, I’m writing a little and doing the some of the things that I mentioned in response to the previous question.

I’m really good at

Listening. Finding misplaced punctuation marks. Ranting about current events. Baking and eating cookies. Scrabble.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm guessing it's my abundance of golden ringlets.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I have lots of favorite books, and I'm always discovering new ones. Enduring picks: Light Years by James Salter, Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner, Joan Didion's nonfiction, Elizabeth Bishop's collected poems, The Great Gatsby, Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. The Little House on the Prairie books had a major influence on me back when I was wee.

Movies: Lost in Translation, Rushmore, The Last Waltz, Annie Hall.

Music: Wilco is probably my all-time fave. I like the other indie bands that kind of sound like them, too. I love music, but I'm really sick of everything I own right now, and am accepting recommendations for new stuff.

The six things I could never do without

A pen, sunglasses, Earl Grey tea, bacon, olive oil, my mom.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The pioneers. It blows my mind that someone would ever just load up a wagon and take the family out west, into the wilderness where there were bears and diseases and hostile natives and who knew what else. It also amazes me that I can fly back to California to visit my family in six hours, when it would have taken months to make the same trip back in the olden days, and I probably would have died some horrible death on the way.

On a typical Friday night I am

Some combination of the following: having a beer or two (on a patio, weather permitting), hanging out with my buddies, making and eating an awesome dinner.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

The pioneer thing.

You should message me if

You’re funny and laid-back, and a little bit nerdy but also in possession of reasonable social skills.
