When I was 4 or 5, my mother got a really bad, late-1980s perm. She came to pick me up at preschool at which point I tried to convince the playground aide that my mother was dead and this person was clearly an impostor. After showing multiple forms of state-issued ID, my mother managed to collect me and return home. I refused to speak to her or recognize that she was even my mother for two weeks --- thus she learned never to go and get a bad, late-1980s perm ever again.
