My self-summary
Serious-seeming; secretly silly.

I'm an introvert and generally a bit socially awkward, but I'm working on it. Right now I'm trying to meet more new people, to encounter more new perspectives to learn about and from.

I love to read. I like to write, sometimes, when the urge strikes with sufficient force to overcome laziness. Above all, I think, I love to learn.

Check my website (it's mostly a fledgling blog at this point) at jimperio.com!
What I’m doing with my life
I'm currently working as a software developer at a small local technology startup: https://www.insynchq.com/ It's been a fun ride, and it's not over yet!

Outside of work, I read a lot, I write sometimes, and more or less constantly I try to learn more and figure out my life and all that's in it.
I’m really good at
Picking new stuff up and getting into new areas of knowledge fairly quickly, and in fact I enjoy that a lot. (Still, it's breadth AND depth that counts, I know.)

I'm too good at self-deprecation, and am beginning to think that act's getting old.

I'd really really love to be great at synthesizing ideas across different fields of knowledge. But first I actually have to become proficient and work towards mastery in at least one!
The first things people usually notice about me
Right now? The hair. (I'm at that "let's see how long I can grow out my hair" boyhood phase.)

How quiet I am, but also how I can suddenly jump into the conversation with some relevant, well-timed quip (on good days, anyway).
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Haruki Murakami is my current favorite author (and has been for a while) -- top three of his for me would be 1Q84, Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, and The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. Other favorite authors: Jose Saramago, Will Durant, George R.R. Martin, Frank Herbert, Orson Scott Card, Douglas Adams.

Movies that I love and could watch over and over: Megane (and Kamome Diner to a slightly lesser extent), The Station Agent, Lost in Translation, Whisper of the Heart (and Miyazaki in general).

Music: Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, Belle & Sebastian, The Beatles, Iron & Wine, Acid House Kings, Bob Dylan, Everything But the Girl, Jens Lekman, Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright, among of course many others.

Food: Coffee. Dark chocolate. I enjoy a variety of cuisines and foods, from Filipino to Japanese to Singaporean to Indian. I would love to experience and learn about new dishes and cuisines!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My life, and how I can improve myself, though lately I'm becoming slowly convinced that self-improvement isn't necessarily the best lens to view the world through.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either staying late at the office to hang out with the guys or going out with other friends for dinner and drinks.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I don't know myself, I have no conviction, and it's been causing me no end of trouble. Back in the day I could spend hours ruminating and writing journal entries about the same old uncertainties... Come to think of it, I think I still can, but I've at least lost some taste for it. A shame.
