My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hi! I'm Alice- composer, teacher, singer, geek, builder of sandcastles.

I'm an insatiable reader and a stubborn idealist.

Samwise Gamgee, Atticus Finch and Don Quixote are heroes of mine.

I sometimes think that music is my native language.

I respect creativity, imagination, kindness and those who live by the ideals they hold.

I have a serious fondness for long walks, good food and penguins.

I wear my heart on my sleeve and I'm completely devoted to the people close to me.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Building a kindergarten-8th grade music program at a brand new school in downtown LA. It's intense and you never know what to expect on any given day. I love it.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
-empathizing: I unfailingly see the good in people and understand both sides of situations, sometimes to a fault.

-being a deeply loyal friend

- working with children

- composing, singing and writing

-giving hugs, smiles, and support, making people around me feel better.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My voice. I'm little but I have a low-pitched, big voice and I can project when I want to. I love that it always surprises people talking to me for the first time.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
BOOKS: Total bookworm here! A few of my favorites are Good Omens, the Mistborn series, Les Miserables, Once and Future King, the Discworld series, Way of Kings (actually, anything by Brandon Sanderson or Neil Gaiman), Don Quixote, The City and the City, the Song of Ice and Fire series, Ender's Game, Name of the Wind, Felix Castor books, Dresden Files, Sabriel, Alice in Wonderland of course... I could just keep going...

COMICS: Sandman, The Unwritten, Watchmen

MOVIES: Lord of the Rings, Mr. Holland's Opus, Amadeus, Star Wars, Dogma, Contact, The King's Speech, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Casablanca, Miyazaki movies

SHOWS: Orange is the New Black, Doctor Who, West Wing, Modern Family, Firefly, Game of Thrones, Star Trek: TNG, Battlestar Galactica, ER, Daily Show/Colbert Report, Futurama. Cheesy Food Network shows are my guilty pleasure.

PODCASTS: I love Serial, Welcome to Night Vale, and this American Life.

MUSIC: My taste is insanely eclectic, and I'm always excited to learn about new music I haven't heard. Some of my current favorites are Vienna Teng, Ludo, Rush, Indigo Girls, R.E.M, Goo Goo Dolls, Mumford and Sons, and Imagine Dragons. I listen to a lot of soundtracks and musicals- Les Miz is my all time favorite, but I also love Last Five Years, Rent, Wicked, Candide, Next to Normal and anything by Sondheim.
There's also the part of my music collection that totally gives me away as a composer- some of my favorites and biggest influences are Berio, Barber, Vaughan Williams, Reich, Gubaidulina, Ligeti, Strauss and Mahler. I also have a huge soft spot for contemporary choral composers like Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre, or Z. Randall Stroope.

FOOD: Curry! I love Thai and Indian, but Italian or sushi are also good anytime. Popcorn is also up there as a favorite treat.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
-my friends and family
-a sense of humor
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
People- I'm constantly thinking (obsessing?) about my classes, how they're doing and how to help them. Also, generally how everyone around me is doing, how I could help, and people's actions and motivations.

Music, especially its narrative properties. I have a habit of writing the soundtrack to my daily life as I'm going about my day, and sometimes like to amuse myself with it- I almost always have a piece of music going through my mind and love doing the most mundane errands while listening to epic orchestral movie soundtracks. It makes it so much more entertaining!
...I have been known to get a few measures of a new piece in my head and go scrambling for paper, or start singing with very little provocation :-P

Ethical and moral questions- It's not an area where I ever expect to find the answers, but looking for them and pondering them is very important to me.

My current projects, either the music I'm working on or the stories I'm writing.

Books or flights of imagination. I think entirely too much (a dangerous pasttime, I know.)
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Lesson planning, or taking some recovery time from the week.

Spending time with friends- maybe out grabbing a coffee or dinner, maybe cooking a new recipe and watching a geeky movie on Netflix, maybe just catching up.

I'm also very likely to be at my keyboard writing a piece, or curled up with a good book.

Or, of course, I have rehearsal :-P
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Superman is definitely my favorite superhero.

Go for it! I'm always happy to hear from new people.

The way to my heart is through my bookshelf- if you have a good book recommendation or we can have a great philosophical, geeky, or imaginative conversation, consider me swept off my feet :-)
