I am quirky, goofy, and a total sillypants.
My Self-Summary
The Basics:
I'm a student at the University of Calgary working on a BA in
Women's Studies and Philosophy. I'm just about to go into my fifth
year, which means I'm 8 months away from losing my Full-Time
student status and having to enter this thing called "the real
world", unless of course my projected masters programs decide that
I'm totally worth the investment.
A Little More Personal:
I'm a fairly goofy person, but I'm very serious about it. I tend to
not get along well with people who are unwilling or unable to laugh
at their own expense, or at my expense, or simply to get silly
about even the most serious of things. (A word of warning: I can't
handle awkward, stressful, or emotional situations like a
well-adjusted person, so I tend to make a lot of innapropriate
jokes at even less appropriate times.)
My Pet Peeves:
Include chewing with your mouth open, not being willing to try new
things, and taking things far too personally.
What I’m doing with my life
Like I said, I'm working on my BA, but that honestly doesn't seem
to mean much these days, in a time when it's hard to get a job
without at least a Masters. That being said, I don't really know
what I want to do after graduation, though I've considered going
into Elementary education, Law, or just going for my PhD and
ideally getting a sweet research or professorship gig. At the
moment, I'm looking into MLIS programs, because working with books
just seems like the best fit. Plus, the UofA has a killer 3-year
program, so that's 3 more years to enjoy being a student.
Other than that, I'd like to some day move out of Alberta, ideally
to the Lower Mainland of BC, or into Ontario.
I’m really good at
Creative things. Although, saying that, I feel like I'm lying. I'm
not REALLY good at creative things, I just have an interest in
them. A passion for them. I like stencilling my own tshirts, making
zines and mini-comics, knitting, painting, sketching, and
cartooning. I also love photography, and have a pretty strange
collection of cameras, including a decent selection of
point-and-shoots, an SLR, a couple standard digitals, and an
old-school canon point and shoot that I found at Goodwill for $7 at
christmas. (On an updated note, the Goodwill camera has since
joined the pile of non-working electronics at my home. But I did
pick up a replacement Action-Sampler from the fine people at
Lomography.)
I'm also really good at going out on a limb, making an ass out of
myself, and making really dumb decisions.
The first things people usually notice about me
I almost always have a smile on my face, I have some strange
tshirts, and occasionally my hair ends up being a strange colour!
(To date it's been every colour of the rainbow, though I've been
keeping to some pretty neutral reds and browns as of late.)
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books:
Night (Wiesel), Never Have Your Dog Stuffed (Alan Alda), Tuesdays
With Morrie (Mitch Albom), 1984 (Orwell), The Catcher in the Rye
(Salinger), Siddhartha (Hesse), On Beyond Zebra (Seuss) The Amazing
Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Chabon), Life After God (Douglas
Coupland) and The Phantom Tollbooth (Juster)
Movies:
I'm pretty open to movies, though ones that I'll probably never
watch again include: Good Luck Chuck, Signs, and Lawrence of
Arabia.
TV:
How I Met Your Mother, The Office (So far I've only watched the US,
but I want to watch the UK), Planet Earth, The Big Bang Theory,
M*A*S*H, Buffy, Angel, and Bones.
Music:
Mostly smaller bands, like Hey Ocean!, Said the Whale, Hollerado,
Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, Family Force Five and Library Voices,
but I'm also keen on Ben Folds, Stephen Malkmus, Girl Talk, the
Vengaboys, Kris Kross (basically any 90's pop sensation, really),
Aesop Rock, Pigeon John, Bon Iver, Jack Johnson, and Flight of the
Conchords.
Food:
The only foods that I'm not willing to try are peanuts, hazelnuts,
and macadamia nuts. Long live allergies. (Also kumquats, because
they're just not enjoyable.) I really enjoy italian and mexican
foods, though.
The six things I could never do without
1. My ability to hear. (One of my biggest fears is going
deaf.)
2. Family.
3. Music. (Dear god, I don't know what I would do. Live music is my
life.)
4. Books.
5. My Cell Phone. (There's something about knowing that I'm always
able to be in touch with people that is oddly comforting.)
6. The Internet. (I don't know what I did before the days of IMDB,
Wikipedia, and Email.)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The philosopher in me is going to come out here and say, right off
the bat, that I think a lot about morality, absolutism,
responsibility, and death. I don't dwell in these thoughts, but at
any stray moment if you catch me glancing off into the distance or
totally zoned out, that's probably what I'm thinking about.
I also think a lot about future projects (of the creative variety),
music, and what the hell I might decide to do with the rest of my
life once The Rest of My Life comes around.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either at a show, checking out some small band, or hanging out at
home, knitting, drawing, listening to music, or reading. I also
enjoy going to movies (who doesn't, really?), going around taking
photos, and just hanging out playing boardgames. (Scattergories,
Quelph, or Life, anyone?)
My friends and I also tend to end up spending our Friday nights at
our favourite pub downtown, which just means that the
knitting/boardgames/music has been relocated to a booth where they
serve me pints of my favourite local brews.
(And, during the school year, Friday afternoons are often spent
enjoying free tunes at the University! Long live TES.)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
Despite my seemingly cool and confident exterior, I'm fairly
wrought with insecurities, and rather than talking about them, I
tend to bury them deep within my cold, dead heart.
You should message me if
If you know of some awesome band that's coming to town that I
should check out, or if you think we'd get along.
