My self-summary
I'm an educated individual with a variety of interests. I started my undergraduate in music (played the saxophone), but ended up switching to the biological sciences and eventually earned a PhD in biochemistry. I play the asian strategy game "Go." I love jazz and classical music and try to make it to The Dakota and Orchestra Hall as much as I can. Last summer I took up cycling. I love riding around the cities on all of the beautiful trails we have available. This year I rode the MS 150 and had a blast!

When I have time and am in the mood I love to draw - mostly colored pencil portraits. I'm not great, but I find it relaxing and try to improve with each new drawing. I also have started drawing little cartoon versions of the cells I study in lab.

I also, like everyone else it seems, got a DSLR a couple years back and enjoy taking pictures. I like to hang around a party with it until people finally forget that I'm taking pictures, at which point I'm able to capture some nice candid shots. I love to capture a great natural expression on someone's face. No posing please.

I would say that my defining personal characteristics are that I'm kind, caring, understanding, non-judgemental, and extremely patient.

Also, I'm not really into sports, and by that I mean I often forget that sports are a thing. I know that for many people sports are a big part of their social life, so I feel somewhat obligated to add this disclaimer.
What I’m doing with my life
I currently work in a research lab at the University of Minnesota.
I’m really good at
Go
Sciencing
Drawing
Playing the saxophone (or at least I was at one time)
Some video games (I haven't played in a while, but I could still probably waste most people at Tetris Attack and Smash Bros)
Biking
Scatting along with jazz solos in my music collection
The first things people usually notice about me
I have no clue....glasses? Smile?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Music: Mahler, Dvorak, Beethoven, Chopin, Satie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, among others. During summer 2011 I had the pleasure of hearing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform Mahler's 9th symphony, which ranks as one of the most incredible musical experiences of my life.

Podcasts: This American Life. Savage Love Podcast.

Shows: Breaking Bad, The Wire, MadMen, 30 Rock, South Park, Arrested Development.

Books: I have many books but feel that my time spent reading literature has been replaced with reading journal articles. I read a mixture of literature and "academic nonfiction" I guess I'll call it. Thomas Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions," launched my interest in science studies literature back in college. The last major work I read and loved was Moby Dick. I went through a Japanese literature phase where I read most of the works of Kawabata, Soseki, and Tanizaki. Currently reading: "Fool Me Twice: Fighting the Assault on Science in America."
