I am cerebral, Jamaican, and graying.

My Self-Summary

"Architect", if you are to believe my Myers-Briggs personality type or my undergrad major--though these days I think about space in different ways. "Fun", if you prefer the endorsement of current friends. "A little too serious for his own good", if you teleport back to 1989 and ask my school mates. "Wanker", well, no one has really said that, but it's such a lovely word. "Hipster-wannabe", if you poll my students, who were still wearing diapers when I was in college. "Postdoc", if you find job titles descriptive. "Outdoorsy", if you're looking for a hiking partner. "Curious", in all sorts of ways.

What I’m doing with my life

Reading and writing about space, as it is portrayed in some texts from the ancient Near East

Exploring Oakland, and offering East Bay recommendations to all those living in SF

Looking to meet people

I’m really good at

Learning new tricks; fixing stuff; using my hands; fooling Microsoft Word into doing things it's supposed to do; asking questions; savoring the sunshine; faking a basic knowledge of wine; observing.

The first things people usually notice about me

I am disarming. I don't easily fit their categories. I have an accent.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I've been rediscovering radio of late, and am always entertained by Tom Sutcliffe and his guests, or by Ira Glass and his version of America--though I must confess that I'm no fan of Terry Gross. I'm currently salivating over Robert Bringhurst's Elements of Typographic Style. And as for movies, I watch a lot of shit. You name it, I'll devote a few hours to it. Amongst my favourites are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost in Translation, Juno, Dark Knight, The Anniversary Party, Before Sunset, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Ice Storm, Hero, Love Actually, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Monsoon Wedding, Casino Royale, Abre Los Ojos, Une Liaison Pornographique, Amores Perros, Strictly Ballroom, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Wonder Boys, and I could go on.

The six things I could never do without

- My sense of smell
- A question to ponder
- Chocolate milk (or so recommends Michael Pollan)
- The Sea
- Something to laugh at
- Ambiguity

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East (it is my job, afterall).

And space.

On a typical Friday night I am

looking for something to do

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I used to sport a goatee. Though here in California, land of the non-ironic full beard, this doesn't seem quite as embarassing as it used to.

You should message me if

you wear glasses

or you like reading books not just for their content, but for the feel of the paper, the smell of the spine, the use of ligatures, and the flow of well-kerned lines of jet-black text

or you've lived outside the USA

or your voice rivals Mariella Frostrup's

or you've heard of Lefebvre, Chomsky, Derrida, Habermas, Foucault, Adorno, Benjamin, Spivak, Butler etc etc (but, to the embarassment of your friends you haven't read most of them)

or, as far as you're concerned, dessert is just another name for chocolate

or you can make something with your hands
